BANGKOK (AP) — China announced Tuesday it is banning exports to the United States of gallium, germanium, antimony and other key high-tech materials with potential military applications, as a general principle, lashing back at U.S. limits on semiconductor-related exports.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry announced the move after the Washington expanded its list of Chinese companies subject to export controls on computer chip-making equipment, software and high-bandwidth memory chips. Such chips are needed for advanced applications.

The ratcheting up of trade restrictions comes as President-elect Donald Trump has been threatening to sharply raise tariffs on imports from China and other countries, potentially intensifying simmering tensions over trade and technology.

You want tariffs? Fine. We'll block or restrict exports of all key minerals used in your industries. Have fun trying to make high-end chips, batteries, motors, and other key parts used in missiles, radars, electronics, and even artillery shells. This is what happens when the US is dumb enough to outsource most of its industry & supply lines to China.

If the US goes ahead with its tariffs and China & Russia retaliate with export controls, the US would be utterly fucked. No rare earth elements so all advanced electronics & semiconductors are gone, no titanium either so the commercial & military aviation industries are dead, no uranium, no lithium, lots of key metals & minerals are gone too so the US gets its industry chopped out from the bottom up. Canada could probably make up the uranium shortage but we're getting hit with tariffs too so it's not going to be cheap.

Honestly? I hope the US does it. It's time they found out the hard way where they really stand in the world. Maybe, just maybe, they'll learn to stop being assholes when they get sufficiently fucked by their own arrogance & stupidity.

Trump is clearly using tariffs as a strong arm negotiation tactic, obviously not all of this will roll out like he's claiming.

I do find it ironic however that you're going to get butthurt about countries working towards dedollarization when they are being subjected to severe sanctions and prevented from participating in the market to begin with.
