Jon’s toughest fights were similar to GSP’s loss Serra.
When you’re that far ahead of the competition, it creates ego, not taking the fight or preparation as seriously, and there isn’t the same healthy fear which produces adrenaline and optimizes performance.
Conversely, one of Jon’s best performances to this day was against rampage where he was admittedly scared.
This is a less known truth about Jones, but he’s had motivational issues throughout his career. Kinda like BJ Penn in a sense where he was so talented that he’d just show up to fights and still win.
Which is a common issue of talent when you’ve been so dominant, Tyson was another example of this.
Jones beat everyone in his division after only a few years of training and did it easily. So when you really study his career and performances, many of his fights were him going through the motions, partying leading up to them, or just not taking it as seriously as he should. Especially after the early part of his career.
Only problem is, he was so good that he would still get away with it.
DC is probably the only fighter who Jon really trained like his life depended on it and tapped into his full potential and soul in order to beat him, because he needed to. That’s how good DC was.
With that context in mind, Jon’s least impressive, closest fights aren’t what most people think they are.
The reality is that his biggest enemy is himself and the battle with his own potential. Much like it was with BJ.
This is also a lesser seen reason why he’s selective with fights and even moved to HW to begin with. Motivation. A fight that gets him excited to run every day with the fire he had as a kid.
