Jon Jones, Dana White Differ on Timeline for Retirement

Dana is definitely lying. Jones was talking about Stipe being his last fight prior to it being cancelled the first time around.

I bet it went something like this. Jones says he’s retired but indicated possibility of openness to the right deal. Dana asks if he’ll hear an offer and he accepts. The negotiate back and forth, Dana feels like they’ve reached an agreement but Jones says nah, I’m retired when it comes down to it.

Dana was serious about getting the fight done, Jones was playing hard to get and sending mixed messages. Dana came up with the money and thought the deal was then done but Jones backtracked and said he needed more time to think about it. Dana gave him more time in desperate hope that the fight could be salvaged. Jon's time ran out and Dana finally had to admit defeat and pulled the plug in order to make the backup fight this fall.

The most likely thing is that Jones "sort of" told the truth (something like "I'm probably done, haven't been working out, would need something really big to agree to fight Tom...") and Dana (who's obviously used to getting his way) heard "Jones wants to fight Tom, just gotta get him a bit more money".

Jones was mostly full of shit knowing his amount was likely absurdly high compared to what he's actually worth. But he likes the attention so left the little possibility open that he'd fight Tom when in reality that money was never gonna be there because Jones didn't really want the fight and priced himself out. Dana's ego wouldn't allow him to see that.

next question: who cares?

both are pathological liars, or close to it.

All of this was to get people talking about Aspinall who nobody cared much about previously. Dana set the play and Jonrs played along. There was never much benefit for the UFC or Jones to fight Aspinall. If Jones won he couldn’t retire or HW would look even worse. It was never worth the risk and in Jones shoes not worth the risk

If Jones won, he would wait around for an easy fight like Pereira. I'm sure they would have rewarded him after Tom but yeah, Jon winning would have been the worst possible outcome.

This a broken man, look at him.

Point and stare.

Remember when he was saying everyone who was upset that Jones was avoiding Aspinal were all just idiots who couldn't see that it was obviously going to happen and Jones shitting on him was just building hype for the fight?

Now? It was obviously never going to happen. And I bet anyone who thought it was is an idiot.

Dana is such a sack of shit if he was more transparent this wouldn't be a issue
He literally was dropping hints the fight would GET done

2 minutes 30 seconds into his in octagon post fight interview after beating Stipe.
"And as far as my future in the octagon, you know, I have decided that maybe I'll not retire. And that, ah... I have some conversations to have with Dana and Hunter. And, ah, we have some negotiating to do. And if everything goes right, maybe we'll give you guys what you want to see."

"We have options, and I'm going to see what Uncle Dana wants, and Uncle Hunter wants, and you guys are going to hear about it soon I'm sure"

If Jones was retired, why was he in the testing pool. Why was he in the rankings. Why didn't he tell people he was retired when they asked him when he was fighting next. I get that you can't announce your next fight before the promotion, but the fighter announces their retirement, not the other way around. Jon dipped out of an interview to not talk about fighting Tom. And Jon posted his retirement message on social media after Dana said that he called and retired the night before.

Do I trust Dana? No. But the evidence supports the version of events he's presented.

Under every imaginable circumstance Jones winning that fight would be catastrophic FOR THE UFC. It just takes an objective mind to understand the situation past the “Jones scared” narrative. The UFC dod and played the situation the best way to build Tom’s name, use Jones, and leave the door open for him for anything in the future. Good business imo

Dana owns his ass at the end of the day… just like he owns all the rest. Ultimate Feudal Contracts.

Jon Jones claims he was essentially retired after besting Stipe Miocic last November. That’s apparently not the impression he gave to UFC brass.

Jones’ retirement didn’t become official until last weekend, when UFC CEO Dana White announced that the heavyweight champion was calling it a career at a press conference in Baku. White later stated that Jones vs. Tom Aspinall was basically a done deal for November in New York before “Bones” had a change of heart. Still, Jones says the decision was made after UFC 309.

“I was retired last November and I’ve been working nonstop, I’m actually working harder now that I’m not fighting, but it’s so much fun,” Jones recently wrote on X. “No more sweating, just using my personality and giving fans all the love that I can. Sounds like a pretty good gig.”

White doubled down on his assertion at the UFC 317 post-fight press conference.

“That’s not true,” White said of Jones’ retirement claims. “I’m telling you the truth. Believe who you want to believe.”

The saga left the heavyweight division in a state of purgatory, as Aspinall and the rest of the division awaited final word on the champion’s next move. According to Jones, it was the promotion that was trying to convince him to change his mind.

“I was told 1000 times to just reconsider and just give it more time,” Jones wrote. “That’s the truth.”
