Jones did not do much at HW, but at LHW he is far and away the GOAT. He ducked nobody in that division. GSP was gifted a MW title shot, then immediately retired instead of fighting a legit contender.

Jones was gifted a title shot, and then was gifted a "title defense" against the shell of Stipe Miocic. Then Jones refused to fight the clear HW #1 contender for 2 years before legally faceplanting once again and retiring.

GSP did it much better. Got in, got his belt and then fucked off knowing he wasn't going to be able to defend.

Jones fought just as many legitimate fights in the division above as GSP did (stipe wasn't a real fight). The difference is GSP had the professionalism and respect to vacate once it was clear his body couldn't make MW healthily. Jones took the opportunity to fuck everything up and absorb a bunch of negative attention for two years.

They can offer compensation instead. And if they're obligated let's say to offer 2 fights per year, there may well not be language specific as to when exactly those fights need to be offered. If the UFC tells the guy "We will pay you more to wait than to fight someone down in the rankings. We are gonna get the Jones fight made. Sit tight"---you wanted him to say no and demand they offer him another defense against someone else? Seriously?

Honestly as a Die hard GSP fan, I have to ask why I don't hear GSP ducked whittaker every day for 9 months but I hear Jones ducked aspinall all the time when in reality they both decided to hang it up. Kudos to them both. Leave on top before the game chews you up and spits you out.

There's a very obvious difference, Rock.


The paths start out similar: Both GSP and Jones moved up in weight to fight for the title against a relatively weak opponent - In GSP's case, he actually fought the existing champ who happened to be a weak champ. In Jones's case, he fought for a vacant title against a guy who had lost to the real champ (ngannou).

After winning the belt, things start to diverge. GSP comes out and declares his inability to continue to fighting at MW due to collitis, among other things. He shortly after does the right thing by leaving the division.

Jones on the other hand, takes an absolute freebie against Stipe - a fight nobody cares about and one which does virtually nothing to demonstrate Jones's abilities. After this waste of a fight, Jones sits on the belt and trolls the sport until his retirement is made necessary by his most recent of many legal problems.

The difference is clear.

So I'll reword it--would you EXPECT someone (that's not already wealthy because they haven't gotten a huge contract or been fighting in the UFC all that long) to demand to be paid LESS money to take a fight and the risks that come with it than to be paid to wait??? Do you think it's a realistic expectation to have someone demand LESS money?

No I would not place that expectation on him or anyone else. I'm not sure I follow you about the less money part. If Tom Got paid to wait to fight Jon why'd would he be demanding LESS money? I assume they are paying him to wait not as much as he'd earn to fight someone else. So wouldn't he be getting MORE money? even if it were the same amount as his regular contracted fights, still wouldn't be less. Plus other incentives... ppv buys ect.

Unless you mean less money than a potential jones fight in which case yes, I'd hope he take another fight (I can't reasonably say I'd place expectations on people)

The easiest way would be to go to them and say "Here's more $ than you'd make fighting Tuivasa or Volkov or whoever's available. Just sit tight. We're paying you more to just wait than to fight because we don't want you fighting someone else--we are gonna get the Jones fight made."

I don't disagree really. As a fan, I don't like it at all though. I like seeing the best guys fight. Good for Tom is he got paid well to sit and obviously I don't blame him one bit for doing it. But that does nothing for me as a fan.

No, he's absolutely not and it makes me laugh when people say it. There's absolutely nothing we've seen that says that. Aspinall is faster, hits harder, and is knocking everyone out in round 1. Gane is a good HW striker but doesn't have much power and isn’t some sort of wizard that nobody can figure out. He was a whisper away from being put to sleep by Tuivasa, Tom has never been in a situation like that. And Pavlovich landed a solid shot on him (one of the biggest hitters at HW) and Tom ate it easily so Tom also probably has the better chin.

He had many events cancelled for many different reasons. Maybe he just wasn’t feeling up to it? He’s proven with Ngannou and Aspinall that it’s in his blood.

He also ducked short notice Chael Sonnen and the event had to be cancelled for that as well.
