Big difference between Jon who's in the twilight of his (already massively accomplished) career and Islam who is in his prime.

There is no difference at all. If you hold the belt, you are claiming to be the best guy in the world, and need to fight the best. If Jones accepts hes no longer at that level, drop the belt.
If Dricus refuses to fight Khamzat and calls out Anderson or Vitor, or Volk calls out Faber, they would be rightly called out on it, as should Jones for fighting Stipe when he hasn't been legitimate for half a decade.

I think its crazy to say Islam is ducking just because he'd rather fight an established LW contender.

I'm pretty skeptical of Ilia as an elite fighter at LW given his best win there is Jai Herbert but as the champion of a lower weight class he should be given the opportunity to jump right into a #1 contender's match. Heck I say make it an interim title fight so Ilia can technically fight for a 2nd belt at LW and lock his shot in so long as its against someone very legit like Oliveira or Arman.

I also think its unfair to downplay Moicano like that. He was on a four fight win streak with three finishes and in at least two of those fights(Turner and BSD) he was a marked underdog. Not to mention he was set to fight on that card and had gone through training camp and made the weight so its not like Moicano rolled off the couch. Arguably a more legit defense than beating Volk who is untested at LW in the UFC or Poirier who was coming off one win and is probably not a top 10 fighter anymore.

A champion doesn’t demand fights. He should fight whomever is next in his own division. It always USED to be like that. Not only do they want to move up for a free TS. But only if it’s against the guy they want to fight. But not if the current Champion successfully defends in his next fight. Because of the silly reason they don’t want to fight another Muslim.
