Daniel Cormier: It Would Have Been Hard for Tom Aspinall to Continue Fighting After Injury

After speaking with Tom Aspinall in person, Daniel Cormier believes his injury was serious enough to stop fighting.

Aspinall looked to defend his heavyweight title against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 on Saturday in Abu Dhabi. The fight, ended in a no contest after a double eye poke from Gane left Aspinall unable to continue late in the first round. Some fans booed Aspinall, who was left angry and frustrated. Fans also accused Aspinall of giving up because Gane was looking good for as long as the fight lasted.



However, having met Aspinall backstage, Cormier believes his injury was fight ending. Cormier revealed that Aspinall’s right eye was bandaged ,as he couldn’t open it even 20 minutes after the fight. According to Cormier, that was likely the lesser of two injuries, since Aspinall’s left eye was poked knuckle-deep. Cormier believes the compromised right eye alone would have made it difficult for Aspinall to continue.

“I saw Tom Aspinall, his right eye is covered in a bandage,” Cormier said on social media. “Because he cannot open it still, we’re 20 minutes past the fight ending. And what’s crazy about this is, his other eye was the one where [Gane’s] hand went knuckle deep. The right side was scraped down more. The left side was the one that went knuckle deep. It really would have been hard to deal with, if not the pain on the other side. Tom was very upset and people were booing. And then people saw the replay and they were like, ‘Wait a minute, maybe we should be booing the other guy.’ Then they booed Ciryl Gane.”

I personally don't focus on the eye issue, if Tom really couldn't see then I can understand him not wanting to continue.

To me the eye issue was very unfortunate and distracts from the fact that he was getting fucking mogged in the cage, Gane landed that awesome counter right before the poke that stumbled Tom back.

The momentum was totally shifting and Tom was about to gas horribly in another round and be a sitting duck, and his takedown attempts were putrid. Gane has been training for a while with the enormous hulk Fotsing and then Pouya Rahmani, literally one of the best overall grapplers on Earth.

The focus should be on all the clowns that said bullshit about Volkov and "one legged Ngannou" wrestling Gane (broken toes Gane in the case of Volkov) so therefore Tom would so easily take him down and sub him. And the clowns saying Gane has no power so Tom will just walk right through him.

Honestly the clown army are loving that the attention is all on the eyepoke and distracts from their incredibly inaccurate, boorish, and asinine assessments of the fight.

Because the best fighters in the world fight through adversity, that's why they're recognized as the best fighters in the world. Rich Franklin knocked out Liddell with a broken arm, Jones fought with a compound fracture where the bone was protruding out of his skin. Tom is not a moron, he's not going to engage in a back and forth dangerous striking battle where he's getting the worst of it when he can just take Gane down and dominate at any time.
