Media Cruz is confident Jones beats Aspinall after Gane exposed Aspinall’s wrestling

Cruz had thought Aspinall had better wrestling and would just do a double leg on Gane and get him down, but Cruz admits Tom just didn’t have the wrestling.

“But right here you see the takedown defense from Gane. Not only did it improve, but I think we also see that Tom Aspinall might no be as high-level of a wrestler as we might have thought. He just faced guys that couldn’t really wrestle.”

I agree I think Jones via Murder if they fought.

Uncle Chael also discusses the takedown attempt by Aspinall that failed horribly.
“Tom misses the takedown by a country mile”

Cruz tought Conor was gassing Khabib out by taking punches to the face. Worst analyst

Too true lol.
Factually though, you do gas out by punching someone.

It’s kind of how Ali beat Foreman.
It’s also how Lesnar beat Carwin.

Imagine if Cruz was commentating as Carwin was wailing Brock as he was cuddled up that Brock was gassing Carwin out.

Then Brock came out and choked out a gassed Carwin, he’d be a genius!

I agree. Maybe it wasn't obvious to Jones, so he didn't want to risk Tom having amazing TDD or something like a natural. Just to give perspective, Gane defending 1 takedown in the 1st round of that fight dropped Aspinall's takedown% to 80%, he was the 1st to stop him. He still has 100% TDD, so still could be like Aldo, just not a great wrestler offensively.

Really think stylistically Jones is a nightmare for the entire HW division right now. Either he has too much injuries and starting to feel age or he got pissed after beating Gane and it not count for his legacy the way he wanted. But still felt like Jones should be able to grind it out with Tom, just keep him down. I'm not convinced Tom is like a Big Nog, Mir, or Werdum level threat with BJJ.

Would have been a better choice of an opponent than a retired 42 yr old who hadn’t fought in over 3 yrs, and was brutally knocked out in his last fight over 3 years ago
It's funny how nobody made these same comments when Jon himself was coming out of 3 year retirement from a "robbery" over a guy like Reyes to fight in a division he'd never fought in.

It's almost like you guys just exclusively make these kind of comments to belittle Jones because you never got to see him "brutally knocked out".

The bitterness is palpatible.

Everybody shits on Cruz for his comment but Khabib did fail to finish Conor that round despite all his energy output and came out to round 3 looking like this:

Khabib had gassed himself, Conor was the fresher fighter, and Conor proceeded to defend all 3 TD attempts, force a standup fight he won, and be the first fighter to ever take a round from Khabib.

Like do people really not realize that Cruz analysis was correct lol? Just because you hate the wording of it and Khabib came back in round 4 to win doesn't make Cruz wrong.

🤦‍♂️
Based on a single half assed shot he took..
this, absolutely. dom should know better, he sounds like the people around here. like one shot in the first round definitively proves anything. let's see it in the third or fourth when gane is tired out and aspinall is really committing to it.

Too bad for you that isn't what happened.

Khabib clearly did gas himself trying to finish Conor in round 2 though, exactly as Cruz predicted. This was the start of round 3 where he lost a round for the first time ever after failing 3 TDs and being forced to stand with Conor:

Khabib turning things around in round 4 doesn't suddenly make Cruz wrong. Khabib did waste a lot of energy in round 2 and it likely cost him round 3

Okay? Khabib still won the round and then won the fight in the very next.

Khabib didn't win round 3 though. He lost it for the first time ever. He tried and failed to take down Conor 3x and was forced to stand with him where he got outstruck 44-17.

You can mock Cruz all you want, but he was right that Khabib tired himself out and wasted too much energy in round 2. That was reflected in round 3. Even your comment that it doesn't matter because he still won in round 4 just proves Cruz point - if the fight's going to round 4 then Khabib doesn't need to be doing all this in round 2.

Like you yourself admit gunning so hard for a finish and instead getting a 10-8 in round 2 when you failed instead of just going for a 10-9 was irrelevant to the fight lmao. It was a waste even according to you.

Christ on a cross lol. Alright let's play in pretend land and give Conor round 3 10-7! He still lost the fight and was emasculated on PPV. I know you need, not want but need literally anything to help you with giving Conor a W so go ahead and take it. Conor won round 3 and then lost in round 4.

You can't help yourself can you? If it's ALL irrelevant because Khabib will win the fight in round 4, which is YOUR POINT, then so is the colossal expenditure of energy in round 2 Khabib did.

Cruz was right. It was a useless waste of gas hunting for a finish that wasn't coming.

That can happen when the ref allows Conor to cheat as much as he did in round 2.

The funniest thing to me about this analogy is that I don’t think Tom has any plans of trying to take Jon down.

Him not being able to double leg Gane is irrelevant.

We haven’t really seen Tom on his back, that would be the exposure that is meaningful.

Legacy wise, jones has nothing to gain from that fight. I think his legacy is cemented, he just wants fights that mean something to him rather than "just another title fight" tom is just another title fight, like reyes or gane

He still gets to say he beat the most accomplished HW in UFC history. Islam is looking to do the same with the Usman win. We know at this point garry or morales is a better win. But in jones eyes a 2x UFC HW champ with 5 title wins is a better win than say gane who has zero title wins. even if you believe gane would be stipe. In islams eyes, beating usman a 6x title fight winner is better than garry or morales who have never fought for a title.

you never know. When jones "beat" reyes, i don't see everyone giving him a ton of credit for beating him (split decision not withstanding) and we dont view it as one of his best wins, despite that fact reyes was undefeated when it happened, mostly because reyes went to lose a bunch right after. beating Aspinall, the exact same thing could have happened, and we'd look at it as just another win against a flash in the pan. like Till vs woodley. So i understand why they go for these sure shots against cemented legacies.

I dont love it. Or agree with it. but I do understand it.
Very well put. Jon already beat a HW prospect with a country behind him in Gane. After that fight, people found every way to discredit the win. Beating Tom would have done as much for his legacy as beating Gane. I agree with you, I don’t love it, but it certainly makes sense from Jon’s pov.

We saw a little bit of that in the Stuart Austin fight. He didn’t look great off of his back, but that was many years ago so he most likely has improved greatly in regards to that part of his game. I will say, though for someone who apparently had been doing bjj his entire life, it didn’t really show that fight.

The whole point is that Cruz saying Khabib was gassing from the punches isn’t ridiculous and is actually factually correct.

Cruz didn’t say Conor was going to win, he just said Khabib was gassing from all the punches, which he was.

Thank God someone can understand this basic point
