i have known for quite some time that a significant proportion of Republican voters would not be in the slightest bit concerned by extra-judicial imprisonments, as long as they hated the people being imprisoned

Nope. Being a member of a gang alone cannot be made into a crime because it's a 1st Amendment protected activity, it's called freedom of assembly. This is why gangbangers arent directly charged with being members of a gang, they're hit with gang enhancements once they do something that IS illegal. That's the caveat of PC186.22, they have to be engaged in illegal activity WHILE part of a gang, and in Court it has to be established that they were doing that activity on behalf of a gang.
One of my former students got hit with a gun charge out there, he was under 21 and in possession of an AK-47. However the gang enhancement fell apart in Court because he wasnt a current gangbanger (former, they hit him with the enhancement based solely on tattoos) and is just a gun enthusiast, legally purchased the gun despite not being 21, and the State couldn't establish that he was doing anything gang-related, he was just in a car with his girlfriend, their baby, and his Cousin. He didnt do any time.

We no longer have to wonder how so many people were Nazis. Plenty of MAGA would have been happy seeing their neighbors ripped out of their homes and sent to camps to die. A lot of people are waiting for that moment for MAGA to wake up and I don’t think that moment will ever come. I don’t think there’s a red line with these monsters. On X, my timeline full of people cheering on the deportation of innocent people to labor camps. Seen someone say they should send the military into Harvard University and round up people not complying. Dark future ahead unless enough dems and independents fight back.

On some level they understand that this society required the subjugation of people to get established...now their tentative rulers want to re-establish that trend under the guise of societal preservation and the idea that "all those criminals" will be living on the same street at them if they dont sacrifice their rights.
Rights in exchange for the mirage of security. I mean it's really a standard playbook, but political ignorance, complacency, and fascination with indivudialism/consumerism always assured people are isolated enough to develop a venomous hatred towards the idea that someone different could live as they do, without first having to suffer for it if they werent born here. And not suffer in a way of their own choosing, but suffer in a way of our choosing...like being jumped into a gang.
The leaders who convince people of this bullsh*t all perpetuate the same idology:
"Vote for me, and you will have power over them."
That quickly becomes:
"Well, you'll have to sacrifice some of your own rights, but trust us, we will only actually do it to them."
Eventually that becomes:
"Yeah we dont care if that was your relative, shut the f*ck up and work that mine or its gulag for you, too."
