No they initially rejected the deal to Costa Rica on the condition that he pleas to his criminal charges. His lawyer said so at the mass protest outside in front of all these cameras. Then he was detained. Subsequently, the administration gave him a 72 hour notice that he will be deported to Uganda (you're required by law to give 72 hour notice of the country you're being deported to.)
And this is why reading more than social media is important.
His lawyer told the court that Costa Rica is an acceptable deportation option.
The judge also gave DOJ an out, here's an exchange from the hearing
below.
Xinis: There's been no assurances from Uganda as far as I know that Mr. Abrego would be able to move about freely, not be refouled (sent back) to El Salvador...
In contrast to what assurances Costa Rica gave, that's significant. So that demonstrates likelihood of success on merits...Government can right that ship by showing me if Uganda has made those representations of non-refoulement, etc. But at least at this juncture, I have nothing that demonstrates that the government is operating in good faith...
So now what will happen is that he will be prosecuted for that trafficking charge and then serve whatever sentence that is if there is any. Then he will be deported.
The government claims he's guilty, but he is innocent until proven otherwise. Take it to court if you want a conviction for trafficking.
Where the hell does he get off thinking he can pick and choose what country he gets deported to? This isn't some game. If every deportee did this, it would be impossible to import 100 people in a year.
Where does someone who's civil rights were flagrantly violated get off vigorously defending themselves with the due processed the Constitution affirms residents are entitled to? The constitution, duh.
Due process isn't meant to be easy or fast, and most deportees are able to go back to their country of origin.
And the US would need an agreement with every country in the world to take third party deportations. Obviously not workable.
Why not? We have a State Department. Are you telling me we can't find several countries willing to take deportees with the guarantee that they aren't transferred again after that? Come on, have some faith in American power.
Weren't you screaming from the rooftops how we couldn't get this guy back from El Salvador before? You might want to reassess your knowledge of IR after that.
You also have to remember El Salvador's Maduro already destroyed all the gangs there in 2022. His claims of being afraid of gang activity in El Salavador no longer exist. He can choose to self deport to his home country, but he won't.
His real goal is to muck up the courts, slow down the process and hope public pressure will allow him to stay in the US.

Lol what utter horseshit. That tinpot dictator actively blocked extradition of gang members to the US because he was afraid they'd spill the beans on his coziness with MS13. Are you going to deny that?
Besides, the government has been very vocal that this guy is a child abuser, human trafficker, etc. Sounds like they got a pretty strong case to be talking so much. Or do you think the DOJ's case is weak?
