Just wondering what you fellow americans think of Trump wanting to implement heavy tariffs on your closest ally.

Are you for or against it?

Or are you ambivalent or perhaps indifferent?

I think that you will taste a lot.

Canada might easily sell their stuff for other countries, especially cos demand is high. Even without U.S.
Exception ofc is electricity.
~ 1 500 000 U.S households are purchasing electricity american companies had imported from Canada.
So ofc businesses can't run with losses without attempts to do all the best in order to reduce losses. Otherwise investors and taxman will not forgive...ofc.
So $ for electricity you will pay more....

U.S is importing from Canada also wood, paper, cellulosis and charcoal.
Charcoal isn't just for heating. It is used in chemistry and pharmacy industry. Easy to sell for China, SK, Japan, Europe....if batch is good quality. Like with coal coke and antracite this might be stored even 10 years and longer if storage conditions are normal. Might be sold or used....

We’ve got Vermont sugar and competitive domestic touk manufacturing.. I don’t see the need.

Its gunna ruin your auto parts industry and make like difficult for you guys as well.

I think it is a dumb move in general to try to turn the whole world against us. He's picking fights with Canada, Mexico, China, and Europe. What happens if they all collectively work together to pass a "Fuck Donald Trump Tariff"?

It seems short sighted and I think it's mainly a bluff to try to force token concessions so he can claim he is a genius deal maker. What happens if they all call his bluff? Can we really fight several trade wars simultaneously without hurting our economy?

I think Trump is banking on countries moving more right so they will hopefully fall in line with him. Additionally, I think he is hoping because certain economies are struggling that they lean on the U.S. in order for him to get what he wants with this External Revenue Service he is supposedly making (i.e. India). Does not make any sense to me. If economies across the world are struggling why would we tariff them? They would just likely trade with other countries but America has been known to not play fair. I can see Trump making it so that if you do trade with certain countries you get in trouble with the U.S. like they do with Cuba and Iran.

Ultimately though I think it is a dumb system. You're forcing countries to pay more in tariffs, they are not going to hire more IRS agents to collect taxes that are due and you have an aging population on a safety net that is getting bigger. I've said this before and I will say it again. I think Trump's second term ends like his first term. There will be a massive recession and eventually all first world countries will have to start taxing the ultra rich.

He has said if Canada can clean up the border situation there will be no tariffs. The corrupt Liberal government instead of doing this has decided to fight Trump on this issue. This is a huge admission that all the immigration and border failures of the last ten years have been by design. They would rather sink the economy than give up the globalist agenda.

Honestly I think it's just a negotiating tactic. I don't think that 25% tariffs would be reasonable, but Canada is weak and largely a joke so we can pretty much do whatever we want to them.

I don't believe it will happen and I think Trump and Poillivere align on energy policy. I think a deal will be struck. It's just negotiation by Trump for increased border support from Canada. Its going to work out.

That's not true. We've beefed up our border security quite a bit. We've got friggin' Black Hawk helicopters circling the border, and added quite a bit more agents. Think there might even a new task force down there. Whether or not Trump will care, remains to be seen.

They only bought 2 helicopters which are only there to patrol 2main ports of entry and they announced 1.3 billion in new funding which hasn't actually been passed because parliament is prorogued. Nothing has been done about wide open areas where drugs and humans are smuggled through. They are doing half assed measures to say they are doing it, when in reality they aren't. Its just as much of an issue of ideologically driven policy as it is a funding issue. Only 1% of cargo at ports is even inspected. We need much much more to address this issue than what has been offered and what has been proposed.

I’m for them until Canada and Mexico do their part on stopping fentanyl from coming across our borders. I know so many people that have lost loved ones from fentanyl. Trump is doing something about it unlike our previous administration. When they start doing their part, the tariffs will be lowered.
