Economy A little context on Canada and "free trade"

You're basically saying "we suck, and we deserve punishment"

It's honestly and truly not what I'm saying. I wish you would go back and read it more closely. What I'm saying is that as Canadians we haven't held our own politicians accountable for the trade policies they have put in place that ultimately harm Canadians (just as Trump has put policies in place that ultimately harmed Americans).

And now they are using Trump as a sort of misdirection tactic to draw attention away from their own malfeasance, and a lot of Canadians are playing along.

It's not the criticism of Trump I'm bothered by. That is well earned. What bothers me is the unearned celebration of our own politicians who have done the same things to us that Trump is now doing.

Aye, getting it better now. Basically, "just because we have a common enemy doesn't make us perfect, we still need to deal with our own internal issues"

Yes. And, to be a little more precise, we need to make our politicians work for us and stop screwing us over, and we can't let them use Trump to distract us from holding them accountable.

We're dealing with that pretty hard here in the US. There's a small handful of Dems who are going out of their way, like AOC/Bernie/Corey Booker/Van Hollen, but there's absolutely no Republicans willing to stand up due to fear. All of their constituents/voters are MAGA.

There is no Republican that will stand up for fear of them losing a cush job. I would rather sleep in the gutter than bow down to that idiot.

I mean, we saw what happened to Jeb. Between Romney, McCain and George Jr, only one has any room to speak. One is a potential war criminal, and the other is dead.

On top of that a complicit House and Senate. It's a perfect storm for an autocracy. What pisses me off is that it has shown my country to be weak. There are no checks. All it took is an asshole to come along and promise them the world. It's pathetic.

The fragility is a bit worrisome, no? 250+ years of democratic constitutionality could be lost within months due to the ignorance of a large population, and the weakness of a supposed opposition.

Excuse my interjection, but conservatives held their politicians to account, but these conservatives were cheated.

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maxime_Bernier
"He proposed abolishing the Canadian Radio-television Telecommunications Commission, privatizing Canada Post Corporation, phasing out supply management on dairy and poultry, and expanding free trade. He also proposed ending inter-provincial trade barriers."

From: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Conservative_Party_of_Canada_leadership_election
"the result of the leadership race and party handling was questioned by some supporters of such as runner-up Maxime Bernier and fifth place candidate Kellie Leitch due to discrepancies in the final ballot count, specifically a gap between the number of ballots cast and the announced result – a 7,466 vote discrepancy, which is greater than Andrew Scheer's 7,049 votes margin of victory in the final round."

Trump can do anything, and anyone doing his bidding can get a pardon. Immunity and pardon ability. When this pendulum swings back, the Dems will be feckless and do the whole "aww shucks" bullshit.

I just find it funny how his supreme court put a stop to the illegal deportations.

Who is going to stop him? Hold him in contempt of court? He controls the military lol

What? We pay much more than Americans for milk. We have a supply management system that enforces price minimums. We regularly pay about double what Americans pay: See Here.

Our Telecom situation is pretty bad due to having only three big (protected) players. For more, read This. The US has small players mixed in and just a whole lot more companies competing for customers that, depending where you are, have unlimited data plans starting from $30 or so. We don't really have unlimited plans in Canada, but to get 200 GB or so it will cost you in the $80-$100 range (which is MUCH better than a few years ago when that was the price for literally 6-8 GB).
Where are those numbers coming from for your source. Looking at Walmart.ca, they have 2L milks for under 5 bucks Canadian. Walmart generic here is 2.50 for a gallon. Fairly similar.

As for phones the US carrier market is even more concentrated than Canada. I don't get where you get the idea that there are more players I'm the US. Our big 3 have more marker share than yours (I do work with both markets). Ditto with data plans, cost is comparable or higher in the US. A 200 GB plan is more than enough for a family of 4 or even 5 (aka equivalent to a new unlimited plan)

A gallon is 4 L. How is $2.50 for 4 L "fairly similar" to $5 for 2 L?

Here's what I find when I google "Unlimited Data Plans" for the US.

You won't find much nuance on these forums unfortunately. I think the tariffs will at least push populism in Canada which is desperately needed at this time. Whether or not that holds up after Trump is to be seen, or whether Canada continues on it's post-nationalist agenda will be seen.

I do think a province like Alberta will be much better suited working closely with America rather than paying half of its earnings in equalization payments to Quebec and other free loading provinces that only serve to limit Alberta's economic ability with restrictive regulation.

Yes, dairy is protected in Canada, not only for the benefit of our dairy farmers, but for our own good.

America pumps their dairy cows full of growth hormone, which is illegal in Canada and the quality of their milk is trash.

No thanks to cheap American "malk", I'll pay the extra couple of bucks.

The telecom beef in the OP is a bit odd, imo. I pay $35/month CAD for 50gb data, unlimited call and text, for use in Canada and USA. Are other countries paying much less than that? If so, I'd be shocked.

I do agree on the interprovincial trade barrier bit. It's a joke that it's taken Trump holding us hostage to attempt to sort that out.

There are decent deals here and there, but I'm pretty sure we rank incredibly low on affordability and access. Pretty sure we're all way behind a lot of other countries, who practically give that shit away.

This is why this election is a battle of boomers who's #1 priority is Donald Trump, and young Canadians who's number 1 priority is our quality of life.

Luckily your an absolute nobody fucking loser . So you'll just have to take whatever crumbs come to you.
