Multiplat DOOM: The Dark Ages (15 May 2025)

As much as I love all things DOOM I was kind of hoping for a Quake reboot next from id Software. Oh well, here’s hoping for more greatness. And if I have one request it’s that they give us some regular death match for multiplayer. The original DOOM literally introduced fps multiplayer and death match. The fact that Doom Eternal didn’t have it was sacrilegious in my opinion.
I'd love a Quake return, soft/hard reboot or not. It's always super nostalgic for me as most of fav games in the late 90's to early 2000's were Quake engine titles, like the Jedi Knight games. I knew the config file inside and out.

I always preferred Quake over Doom significantly until Doom 3 came out. That's still my fav Doom title.

I think this game looks amazing though, but yeah, hopefully they bring Quake back. At least it's a solid IP they can always revive.

Love me some Quake. Have you tried any of the expansions like Dimension of the Machine? I only tried that one briedly but it seems amazing. Almost more Quake than Quake if that makes sense.

And then there's Arcane Dimensions which is a community made mod but it's considered the best out there. I've played a few of those levels. There's a two storey hub connecting a bunch of random levels built by various modders. You have to run it with a modern source port like Ironwail or vkQuake because some of the designs are quite ambitious.

Dimension of the Machine is really good. I actually would say it’s better than Quake’s original campaign which is mostly good but a little inconsistent here and there, while I found DOTM consistently good throughout. Great addition to Nightdive’s 2021 port/remaster for Quake’s 25th anniversary.

I also played through Arcane Dimensions last year. Absolutely fantastic stuff.

I didn't even know these things existed lol, that's amazing news! Thanks fellas!

I've only played a bit of the first map so far but I really like that they used the original music for Dimension of the Machine. Scourge of Armagon sounded kinda weird, more like Quake 2. Completely changed the vibe from Reznor's dark ominous ambient sound of the original game.

At what resolution did you play Arcane Dimensions? I can't seem to use anything other than the default 720p or everything gets zoomed in.

I’m not entirely sure what resolution I was using. I would have to boot it up and check. Iirc I was playing on the Quake Spasm source port, but even with that I’m not 100% sure as I think I finished my play through around November 2023 and since then have done all my Quake 1 and 2 gaming on my PS5. I really only use my gaming laptop for PC exclusives or for mod support.

It might have something to do with my pc display settings being scaled by 300% to fit the TV. I just read there might be a setting in properties of the game exe file to fix it. I'll check it out later.

Xbox might have thrown in the towel on the console wars - XBL, their controller and dashboard are lightyears beyond Sony - but their studios are churning out games this past year in droves. Game Pass for the win. Between this, Indy and Avowed, it'll be a good five month run.

Mid-2010's they began that transition. Console userbase rejected the 2013 marketing strategy shift of making XBox One the central device in their home entertainment center.

Okay?

I've been Xbox over Sony since the 360, but I end up owning both consoles each gen. That won't continue next gen.
