Stipe fought Ngannou twice. He's 1 and 1 with the guy Jones was afraid to fight.

He's not holding up the division, Dana and Jon are. Jon should have been stripped before he tore his pec. The moment that happened the belt should have been between Tom and Stipe. Both Jiri and Hill did the right thing when they got hurt.

Pretty quick? You really don''t remember the long lingering leadup to GSP-Bisping then. Michael was the initial proposed opponent but stuff went on so long Dana, in frustration, gave the fight to Woodley saying about Bisping-GSP "That ship has sailed." Then after the dismal Maia fight he declared "The ship sailed back..."

I seem to remember the fight getting announced (GSP/Bisping) and then GSP pulling out because of an eye injury or something.. even criticizng the UFC for announcing the fight when he wasn't ready. Then as soon as GSP pulled out Bisping claimed to become injured and couldn't fight. But when GSP was back Bisping miraculously recovered (Whittaker was already interim champ by then but he was also miraculously unable to fight due to injury.. which was the excuse for GSP getting the shot instead of Bisping unifying the belts)

It was a big shit show but you're right it probably still didn't drag out as long as this Jones HW champ era in terms of days haha..

Tom was nowhere near a title shot or contender when jones beat Gane, so it could have still gone this way, since jones is out with a year long injury. Jon has not come back from an injury, it is the injury keeping jones out. Unless he can magically make injuries disappear, it could have gone the same way.

So, Jones would have either retired of fought Sergei, who was the next contender as Tom was not in contension for any belt and had a loss to Blaydes whch put him behind Blaydes.

This Tom fascination is odd, it as if people do not understand timelines. Jones could have possibly beaten Sergei and retired as Tom was not a top 4 division fighter at the time jones had made the fight with Stipe.

Yes I blame Stipe. If he wasn't so good in his prime then Jones wouldn't have been scared to move up to HW earlier.

But Stipe was out there beating up scary dudes so Jones had no choice but to wait until Stipe is walking with a cane and playing checkers in the park.

Oh yeah I would've favoured 2017 Stipe over Jones, Stipe at 42, coming off a flatline KO loss over 4 years since his last win I don't have much confidence in.
