Tom Aspinall would never fight with one eye like Michael Bisping did in the later portion of his MMA career.

Aspinall’s heavyweight title fight against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 ended in a no-contest due to an accidental eye poke. Gane simultaneously poked Aspinall in both eyes late in the first round, and the champ was unable to recover despite taking four minutes.

While sympathies are with Aspinall, some like Chael Sonnen believe the Englishman could have continued. Sonnen argued that fighting with compromised vision is nothing new, as fighters’ eyes are often hurt with legal shots.

Few would know more about fighting with impaired vision than Bisping. “The Count” lost his right eye in 2013 after a fight-ending head kick from Vitor Belfort left him with a detached retina. However, instead of giving up the sport, Bisping hid his injury with a fake eye, even faking medical tests to continue fighting. Bisping became the first English UFC champion by knocking out Luke Rockhold to win the middleweight title in 2016.

‘He’s Done More Than I Would’

Aspinall respects his fellow countryman’s spirit for fighting with one eye, something he would never do. Aspinall was taken to the hospital after the fight, where he was evidently in pain with his right eye still patched up. “Honey Badger” said he felt like someone was touching the back of his eyeball.
