Tom Aspinall is by far the worst HW champion we have in awhile. He never won the belt and was anointed champion.
The guy hardly fights and basically looked for a way out of a fight after getting his ass kicked. Him and his dad are saying they won't be able to fight again for another 9-12 months milking the injury and probably hoping Gane gets injured in the meantime. Plus he intends to retire after 2 more fights.
Yes Tim Sylvia was a better champion. He won the belt multiple times and was actually able to defend it. Unlike Tom he didn't quit, when he was almost knocked out by Arlovski he dug deep and came back with the knock out.
Werdum was never a quiter and was always willing to go to war.
Brock lesnar actually defended the belt twice. Unlike Tom when faced with adversity from carwin he dug deep and got the win.
Arlovski was able to knock out the champ and defend his belt. He even gave Fedor a good run but his chin was broken by then. The guy kept fighting and refused to quit even when his chin gave out.
Ricco Rod is similar to Tom. Looked like a great fluid talent but the pressure got to him. But you know despite never living up to his potential I give him credit. He kept fighting. Took some fights with monsters. Kept grinding in the bush leagues and was able to rack up 54 wins at the end of it with 28 loses. Unlike Tom he wasn't a quitter despite knowing he would never reach his glory days again.
Josh Barnett was a great fighter. Prime Barnett would gas Tom out within 3 minutes.
Atleast Randleman defended his belt. And he had his moments beating cro cop. Despite never reaching the top again he kept fighting and had that spirit.
Bas was a legend and it's a shame he retired after winning the belt. You can make the argument Tom is better then Bas as bas was irrelevan after winning the belt as a fighter. The argument for Bas is he had a great personality and gave back to the fans being a commentator which I doubt Tom would do.
Maurice Smith was a can. He was 6-7 when he won the HW blet. But at least he can say he defended the belt and he had the fight in him to keep going long after since he was a .500 fighter, but it's safe to say Tom wins this one.
The fact I made this list also shows how crappy the UFC HW division is right now if tom aspinall is the best we got. I think it might be time to shut it down for a bit after Jones and Alex fight.
