I was losing my mind he wouldn't go for deep half, he appeared to be very well trained on positioning out of Islam's go-to submissions, but his escapes looked bad.

Islam is one of the best MMA adapted grapplers in the world and arguably best of his generation. JDM is competent everywhere but his grappling is best described as average. He needd to hurt Islam on the feet but couldn't get started.

I'm not convinced you can escape from Islam without giving up submissions.

When a fighter is determined to take zero risks and lay on top of you, waiting for you to make a move first, any attempt to escape or stand up will almost certainly lead to a submission opportunity. That's what Islam does: he fishes for those easy submissions while holding half guard or side control, and then if you get frustrated and try to escape, it gives him an opportunity to sink in the submission.

When a fighter defends Islam's submissions and doesn't make any mistakes, does Islam take any risks to try and finish the fight, having every advantage? Nope. We need PRIDE style rules with mandatory standups and yellow cards for attempted point/control fighting.
