That was objectively boring as f***

You can tell they are trained to exploit the rules. As soon as Islam was upkicked in the face in the first round, he looked at the ref like "how can he kick?"

Also the way he would finally relax 10 seconds before the bell rang, stand up, and continue to hold on for life.

Dagestan wrestlers truly are ruining MMA and as soon as they get the first take down, you know it's going to be a waste of time to watch the rest.

I am writing this thread after watching 1.25 rounds of a fight billed as a super fight. I want to first thank God for sparing me watching 3.75 rounds of yet another loophole wrestler doing the exact same thing most fans hated for years. I respect the athleticism and talent involved but it’s trash to watch. I’ve been to many live events and it would have been trash to experience. It was predictable and lame yet unfortunately it is the direction the UFC is headed.
The point of this thread is if die hard fans that have watched every last major event are predicting in advance that someone will wrestle and hold someone down and it will stink, and falling asleep on the biggest fight the UFC can make then perhaps it isn’t the fans nor the fighters that are the problem. Perhaps it is the UFC and the wildly inconsistent officiating.
I witnessed Keith Peterson break up Leon from working against the Octagon after 30 seconds FOR NO REASON while wrestlers are allowed to do the exact same thing FOR ENTIRE ROUNDS. There is no rhyme or reason as to how one of these things is stalling while the other is not. I don’t even understand the mindset of fans that cheer on as fights are separated while a fighter is working against the octagon yet cheer on what Islam did and call it legendary. Anything you can say as to why this was trash will be met with you should watch kickboxing then, while ignoring that 20 year fans are falling asleep on super fights in the first round.
I take nothing from the strength and training of these loophole wrestlers. I refuse to rate it on a scale of greatness. Once a fighter’s performance is so “great” I fall asleep and have zero intention of rewatching for what I missed because it will be more of exactly what put me to sleep how exactly can that be rated as anything I would call greatest?
The issue is that the UFC chose to allow elbow strikes at 12:06 for Jon Jones instead of allowing stomps, soccer kicks, and knees and upkicks on the ground...

Why not just tie their hands together & give them each a knife

That’s not the UFC’s call. It’s the athletic commissions.

Anyone who thinks this waz just a lay & pray event should watch again. This waz a master class imo.

As a high level high school wrestler before teh 1st UFC.... who went on to learn BJJ as a consiquence of the UFC... The nuancez of the ground game are something I am extremely interested in.

It's a double mandate to hold the person down while going for subs & striking damage. Especially against someone who's as skilled as Jack at getting away. The nuancez are where the magic is. Mak is alwayz moving & analyzing & actually went for teh same choke he finished several others with many times. (as well as others)

Jack is just very skilled at negating those positions... but don't mistake Jack's ability to do that, with Mak being inactive or whatever the gripe is. It was a fascinating tutorial from both sides... though I'd expect jack got his leg busted up in teh 2nd or so & was much less able to explode out of the bottom. (unfortunately)

The problem is you can't do that shit against the level of wrestling that Khabib and Islam bring to the table.

BJJ guys all say the same thing until get they get in there with one of these dagi wrestlers, and then they shut their whore mouths afterwards. Even Maia said, NO ONE can submit guys like Khabib in an MMA fight. He's just too good with his top pressure.

That's why we need mandatory standups in MMA. The dagi wrestlers have evolved to the point that they can hold you down for the whole round, and there's nothing you can do. You can't submit them. And if you try to stand up, they will take your back.

If they were forced to open with strikes and go for submissions, or be stood up in 30-60 seconds, then the fights would get much more exciting. When they open up for big punches, that either creates massive damage, or opens opportunities for a scramble to reset to the feet. If they go for an armbar, either they finish the fight, or they create a scramble that leads to opportunities to get back to the feet. They could make an aggressive move to go for mount instead of sitting in half guard or side control, but that would create an opportunity for scrambles to stand up.

Are you seeing a pattern? Caucuses wrestlers like Islam and Khamzat don't want to take risks with half guard and side control, because they know they will win rounds easily. Taking a risk to make the fight more exciting also risks scrambles and their opponent standing up. And unless we have mandatory standups after 30-60 seconds, this won't change.
It’s bad enough they get stood up between rounds. Your suggestion isn’t fighting. Watch Russian mma they have no problem creating space and escaping each other.

What I'm suggesting is absolutely fighting. It's just called sports entertainment.

It's the reason PRIDE had yellow cards for attempts to stall the fight, and quick standups. PRIDE was superior in this regard.

Ok then Randy Couture is gonna come around and hold people against the fence. Then you separate that and Kalib Starns is gonna come around and run around the cage.

You can already watch boxing, kickboxing, powerslap, or WWE.

In all honesty, it was bad, but JDM still did better than Du Plessis. It really puts that fight into perspective, how truly bad Du Plessis was that night.
This, the fight felt "similar" but at the same time it delivered way more, some sub attempts, standup exchanges...DDP vs Chimaev was WAY worst, even if a similar fight.

Yea i definitely cant wait to see one of these guys ko Islam because that was a horrible buzzkill to a great night of fights.

The biggest problem with fighting these guys is everyone is so scared of the wrestling they go away from brought them to the dance. Alex vs Ank 2 showed the game plan.

Twice JDM landed with good hands once in the first minute and with that combo in the second. Rather than continue to press he reset back to distance, getting spooked by feint jabs where Islam can plot. Get in their face, he’s going to shoot, make him shoot with punches coming at him. Give yourself a better chance to sprawl a haphazard attempt, rather than the perfect entry setup at distance.

Alex didnt show shit and Ankalaev is not a wrestler. Alex never faced a good wrestler and that was by design.

All you mfers complaining here are couch potatoes who've never seen insides of an mma gym.

Islam was going for submission many times but Jack and Craig Jones did their homework and prepared well for these goto Islam subs.

I would tell you to watch boxing but you imbeciles are probably bored by boxing to, cause its also not the type of fast food violence your smooth brain yearns for.
