I was really tired last night, so here's some more detail on the competition.
There were 9 guys in the B Class. We started with Hammers. I didn't throw well, but took 3rd in Heavy & 4th in Light. I've been struggling a bit with my hammers, but I'm trying to re-vamp my style a bit to use my hips more. Right now my hammers are suffering some because of it, but the end result is going to be better.
Next we moved to the 56-lb Weight Over Bar, which is an event I've struggled with. But yesterday I was able to clear 12', when my previous PR was 11'. I still have a lot of technique work to improve on here, but getting 12' is at least respectable. Only 3 of us cleared 12', and due to when people had misses, I took 2nd.
Stones were next, I did pretty good with the Braemar Stone, hitting 28-6 with a 24-lb rock, which was good enough for 2nd. Open Stone went well, really liked the rock. I threw 39-7 for a PR & 2nd place. 40' is just around the corner, I expect to hit that next year no problem.
We moved on to Heavy Weight for Distance next. I felt like I was having a pretty good day so far, I had been consistently in the top 3 in each event (didn't realize I had 4th in Light Hammer) & had 2 PRs under my belt. So I went after the HWFD with a great attitude. I had been working a lot on my light weight for distance lately & it translated to heavy. The biggest key for me was staying low. My previous PR in this event was 24-9, and my 1st throw here was 27-6, for a massive PR. So now I'm super pumped, but of course, the guy who had finished 1st in all the events so far (Mike B) came back & threw 27-9 on his 2nd throw to drop me to 2nd place. My 2nd throw was 25-something which would have been a PR if not for my 1st throw. On my 3rd throw, I really went hard, stayed low, got my feet down & blasted out a massive 28-7 to take 1st & a giant PR. This is such a big PR. 28' with the 56-lb WFD is really good.
After HWFD we took a lunch break, and then came back for the 28-lb LWFD. I was still riding high from my 3 PR's today & especially the HWFD. LWFD wasn't really close, I blasted a 55-something on my 1st throw for a PR, then 56-6 on my 3rd throw for another PR. This was good enough for 1st place, 2nd place was 50'. Great event for me.
Sheaf was next, which has historically been my worst event. Something clicked today however & I cleared 16' & 18' nice & easy. 19' was my PR prior to Ventura, but after 2 misses at 20 I cleared it on my 3rd attempt. 5 of us cleared 20', so we moved on to 22'. I cleared it on my 1st attempt, confidence is very high. Mike B missed his 1st 2 attempts, but cleared it on his 3rd. He & I were the only 2 guys to clear 22, so we moved on to 23'. Sheaf of course was right in front of the grandstand, this was mid-afternoon & there were a bunch of spectaors. So that was pretty cool, everyone was cheering for us... We both cleared 23', then missed 24 - but I took 1st based on misses and another giant PR for me.
Last was Caber. The caber they gave is was 19'6" long and 85-lbs, which is pretty damn big. Of course Mike turned it on his 1st try, and then no one else could turn it. I got close with 2 attempts at 80 degrees, which good enough for 3rd in Caber & 2nd overall.
It was a great day and a great end to the season. The Ventura Games was the 1st event I ever competed in, so yesterday marked my 1 year anniversary of competing in Highland Games and it couldn't have gone better. I've steadily improved in each competition I've done:
Oct '11 - Ventura: 1st Place, Novice
Feb '12 - Long Beach: 1st Place, C
May '12 - Costa Mesa: 5th Place, B
June '12 - San Diego: 4th Place, B
Oct '12 - Ventura: 2nd Place, B
Looking forward to next year, hopefully I'll be able to start competing in A's soon!
