BJJ - 1 Hour

Tonight was 30 minutes of drills, 30 minutes of sparring, which for me was two 6-minute rounds. I was exhausted. Haven't been training jiu-jitsu enough so I'm gassing very quickly. Oh well, I think I just need to get in there & take my beatings. BTW, my face is a mess...

Throwing Practice with the OC Highlanders

Braemar Stone (26#)

~5 throws - 27-28' feet maybe
* Felt ok - the big stone feels slow...

Open Stone (16#)
~10 standing throws - Best around 35'
~10 Full Throws - Best were 38-39'
* Need to block better, keep working....40' will come.

HWFD
3 Throws - around 25'
*C-Clamp started breaking...

LWFD
~10 Throws - 58', 59', 60' <-- New Practice PRs
*Really made some BIG improvement here. Worked on staying low & getting my feet down quicker. Need to work on driving UP on my release, I'm throwing line drives.

Light Hammer
~10 Throws - Best around 83'
* really started working on using my hips. Need to rebuild my hammer technique from the beginning.

Got some great technique coaching today on weights & hammer. I'm not using my hips at all on hammer - going to start working hard on that. After the practice today & went to Home Depot & spent $2 on some PVC & rebuilt my hammer when I got home. Going to practice that as much as I can this week.

LWFD is starting to come along nicely. The farthest I've thrown in competition is 54-7 - today I threw several throws beyond that. Very cool stuff...

Really glad I made it to practice today.

And since we're talking about squats, it's time for Brazil's annual Miss Bumbum competition. More than 500 competitors enter the contest each year, and finalists are narrowed to 27

BJJ - 1 Hour nogi

Good nogi session tonight. Got some good wrestling tips from Zeb. Drilled a double leg, duck-under, pull to half guard and some guillotine variations. Then worked 3 minutes each: top & bottom closed guard, top & bottom half guard.

THROWING

Light Hammer (16#)

Lots of winds, focusing on lower bdody.
~10 throws before my fucking handle broke. Maybe I should use Sched 40 instead of sched 80 PVC?

LWFD (28#)
~10 throws - most in the upper 40's, maybe 1 was 50'
Not nearly as good as Sunday, but I'm pretty tired & sore from squats yesterday.

Solid squatting, dude. Congrats on the PRs.

Also, I find those pictures particularly relevant to your squat session.

Why do they have masks on? Are they to be judged ONLY on their ass?

Nice squats! It always amazes me when someone hits 2 PRs in the same session.

Thanks Miaou!!

Thanks hatchoo. I think hitting 2 PR's means that I'm still a beginner in a lot of ways. I'm still learning how to be more INTENSE with my lifting. And when I push it I'm still surprising myself with what I can do. I think the more accomplished lifters can push themselves harder & are more comfortable with pushing past the pain or the fear or whatever.

I was thinking about this recently with my squats. Am I scared? If I'm honest....maybe...I guess... I've never failed a squat rep. Could I have done 5x405? I don't know....maybe....probably. I'm tempted to throw 500 on the bar & squat it just so I can experience failing a rep....

I shared the same fear before. The only thing i can advice you is to know how to fail a squat safely. Put on 135 and try to squat it down to the safeties (if you're using a cage or rack). Always go under the bar visualizing yourself making the lift, but in case you have to bail at least you know how to do it.

5x225
3x275
5x355
3x405
1x455
1x455
1x455

SOHP
5x75
5x95
3x115
5x135
3x155
3x175 <-- Tied Rep PR!

Pullups (palms facing - done between sets of SOHP)
8xBW
7xBW
7xBW
7xBW
7xBW
7xBW

Deadlifts felt heavier than they should have. I think I wasn't getting tight enough. The last single at 455 was the best one. SOHP felt good. Again, hard to keep tight when it gets heavy. Had a trainer at Gold's tell me I was "looking thick" - so thats cool. Overall good workout.

Been thinking about getting a new tattoo, but I'm concerned it would keep me out of training too long.

I'll be back in Hawaii next week. It's a scheduled deload week for me, and I have the Seaside Highland Games when I get back. So probably won't do much in terms of working out. But I will eat like a BOSS.

Little stressed tonight but it felt good to get in & move some weight. Today was my last heavy workout (I know...heavy is relative ;-) before the Seaside Games in Ventura. I'll do a light-ish squat workout on Monday, then I'm going back to Hawaii Monday afternoon. I'll get home about 10pm Friday night from Hawaii, then leave the house at 7am Saturday morning to drive to Ventura. Fun Times! Looking forward to it!!
