BIO:
Height: 6-2
Weight: 215
BJJ Purple Belt
Age: 40
I currently work out 3-4 days a week and train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu 2-4 days a week. I'm also training and compete in Scottish Highland Games. Before starting a legit strength program in May 2010, I had not really lifted weights for close to 20 years.

In May 2010, I tested my 5 rep max:

Bench: 205
Squat: 225
Deadlift: 255
SOHP: 125

I've made huge gains since starting:

Current PR's:
Bench: 1x315 - 2/8/2012 - Bench Press 1x315.MOV - YouTube
Low Bar Squats: 1x405 - 12/23/2011 - Squat 1x405 - YouTube
Deadlift: 1x475 - 2/20/2012 - Deadlift 1x475 - YouTube
SOHP: 1x205 - 12/27/2011 - Strict Overhead Press - 1x205 - YouTube
Push Press: 1x245 - 12/29/2011 - Push Press 1x245 - YouTube
Weighted Chins: 1xBW+115 (336 lb Total) - 5/2/2011 - Chinup BW+115 lbs (337 lbs Total).avi - YouTube

GOALS FOR 2012
Bench Press: 315 - Completed 2/8/2012
Deadlift: 500
Squat: 455
Push Press: 275
Strict Press: Bodyweight

I competed in my 1st Powerlifting meet in September 2012. Totaled 1158 @ 220. Here's the vid:

Since this is a new log, I should probably document my current training schedule:

Monday: Deadlift, DE Squats + Assistance
Wednesday: Bench, SOHP + Assistance
Thursday: Biceps & Triceps if I have time.
Friday: Squats + Assistance
Saturday: Bench, Push Press + Assitance

I'm currently doing the MM2K program for bench. Last time I ran this I added 20 pounds to my bench, hoping to get similar results this time! Once I finish MM2K, I'll move back to Juggernaut Method or 5/3/1 for bench.

I have a good feeling about your 2012. I foresee big numbers being put up.

Does this count as first post?!

DUDE! Two things I didn't realize about you: You're almost 40! Sorry if that burns, but if it makes you feel any better, I thought you were in your 20's. AND you're a blue belt. Awesome.

Thanks, Goon! I'm hoping for some big numbers too!!

:) Yep, I'll be 40 in March - looking forward to it!! I'll be celebrating in my kilt on St Patricks day in downtown HB!!

And if I can ever stay consistent with my BJJ I've got a shot at my purple belt in 2012, which would be pretty sweet...

BJJ - 2 Hours

1 Hour Advanced Class + 1 Hour sparring. Man, I'm still exhausted, and I'm updating this the next day... Worked on a setup for an inside trip takedown. Also worked on moving from side mount to triangle setup from the top. I struggled a bit with both of these. I need to work harder on my flexibility...

Rolling was pretty good, but I was really tired. I got worked over by a lot of different guys. Face is a mess lol.

I've thought about it, and I think I've made up my mind:

I want to be Calvus when I grow up.

LB Squats

5x135
5x185
3x225
2x255
8x275
8x275

No assistance work today, had to go pick daughter up from school right after the squats.

You should aim higher. But make sure you enjoy the journey.

Don't sell yourself short. You're three years older than I am, massively stronger than I am and still improving, and have managed to fit BJJ and Highland games into your life on a regular basis.

I'm not sure how you've managed it (found the secret 25th hour in the day?), but I'll be pretty pleased if I can manage even part of the same.

Thanks man! I didn't realize we were that close to the same age :)

You know for me, I think I work hard to fit my workouts in on my schedule. Having a home gym really helps, especially since my job requires me to work from home most of the time. My gym is in the garage & I can work out ANY TIME day or night. But I also understand that I'm going to miss some workouts. If I miss it I'll try to make it up, if I can't then I'll just move on. Not going to sweat it. And if I have time for some extra stuff, then I'll squeeze that in when I can.

It also helps that I live with all girls (wife, 2 daughters & mother-in-law) and I think sometimes they feel sorry for me. So they leave me alone if I need to go hide in the garage for a cpl hours... :)

Really tough workout today. Felt tire all day, but went ahead & got through the workout. Set a rep PR in Bench, but Push Press after was really hard. I need to change what I'm doing with Push Press next time. Heavy Bench followed by HEavy Push Press is too much I think.

Having a post-workout Boddington's right now...

I like the pictures. Great bench pressing!

I don't know what would cause overhead to feel heavy after 280*4 on bench. I'll. Do some research you may need to see a doctor

Remember it only hurts if you tense up

Thanks Midmo!

Highland Games Practice with the OC Highlanders

Decent practice, but was just exhausted the entire time. Didn't get enough sleep last night due to grumpy puppy & puking kid.

Stones - Decent work here

WFD - Worked heavy & light. felt pretty good

WOB - Took 2 attempts with the 56. Almost cleared 11-6.

Light Hammer - A few throws in the mid-70s.

Sheaf - A few tosses in the 14' range. felt awkward.
