Merab is great, but lets chill brah

Merab has great cardio and good enough striking to not get blown out on the feet. He's a certified beast but I think people REALLY exaggerate how well he did in this fight with Umar. He landed what, one good right hand in the 4th? And spammed takedowns that were largely ineffectual while Joe and Cormier were giving him sloppy, drooling, dome and cradling his jewels for getting stuffed and making Umar tired. Did he even keep Umar on the ground for more than 20 or 30 seconds of control when Umar was utterly exhausted? He didn't win by a large margin, he wasn't rag dolling Lil Khabib.

While Merab's cardio is insane, he does slow and start eating shots in the fif round, at least his last two fights anyway. Showboating can be fun to see in fights but it annoys me when the guy showboating has mainly beat up the other fighter's lungs more so than the rest of them, especially when they're stalling and moving away in the final round to secure the win.

I've seen shit loads of posts talking about the fight like it was some blowout and questioning Lil Eagle's heart, but it's like, chill dudes. Merab won and is probably gonna hold on to the belt for a while from the looks of it, but lets stay in orbit of the planet here. This wasn't GSP/Penn 2 or some shit. He put on a good performance and wore Umar down. He's world class, Umar isn't a scrub for losing to a machine like Merab.
Pretty much this. If you never saw the fight, you would be forgiven for thinking Umar was Ko'd or grappled to oblivion rather then gassing out against a cardio machine and coming out with no visible damage in a decision loss. LMFAO.

He did try to avoid Umar and wanted Figgy instead. Of course he ended up fighting Umar anyway but he was accused of ducking. It was surprising to me because in my mind he was the favorite and I expect him to win more or less the way he did but for whatever reason Merab was annoyed at Umar's title shot.
No figgy just deserved it more. he was just making note of that publically.

figgy was a former champion who moved up and was asked to win 4 fights when 3 should have been enough. He beat chito vera who had just fought for a title it was more than fair to assume that the most deserving contender at the time was figgy.

The consensus in the MMA community was that Umar should get it for being undefeated and having beat Cory who was ranked #2.

I like Figgy and would've preferred he got the shot but Umar was the guy at the time in the eyes of most and Merab seemed bothered by that. I don't get it because I felt he would win as he did. After Merab beat Yan the way he did he was the best BW in the world in my mind.

only got that favourable match making because his last name, same with his title shot.
I don't think that's fair, Umar fought some tough guys like Raoni and Cory.

Both Umar and Figgy were in title contention and either could've got the shot and I wouldn't have thought it unfair

Figgy is already a proven champion from a lower weight class who has 4 title fight wins in the UFC. an aging guy who has paid his dues. Already has a win over the current and former Flyweight champ. Moved up and beat a perennial top 5, a former BW champ and the most recent title challenger. (who had never been knocked down in the UFC before fighting Figgy)

IMO it should be a no brainer and not up for debate. How umar gets a match up with sandhagen after wins against barcelos and ?????? Is just beyond me and "no one wanted to fight him" is just promotional talk. They didn't name a single person who wouldn't fight him. I Dunno, I've never seen a former defending champ switch divisions and have to do so much to get a title shot. Just kinda insane to me.

Poatan is another fighter in recent history that got a fast track, but he got a fast track because Izzy had already cleaned out his division. 3 fighters have openly stated (2 unprompted; J. Picket, C.Curtis) that they've refused match ups with Poatan. This isn't the same. There are other contenders to fight for Merab. Could do Merab vs figgy first, Then do Umar vs yadong. 2 fresh title contenders worst case scenario. Instead we give nepotism title shots and this is what we get. All the top guys coming off losses, only rematches to make and now crap like Merab vs O'malley can be justified. Doesn't surprise me though. They made the Umar fight because it draws. It's why they'll make the O'malley match up next. So if we liked the Umar match, there SHOULD be no reason to complain about about the O'malley one. After all, It's what making the "Consensus Right match-up" has lead us to.

One guy with a shit take supporting another guy with a shit take by creating a retarded strawman.

Good job clowns.

Cory is a better win than any of the three that Figgy beat but the guys Figgy beat are better than the other five in Umar's streak. I'm kind of with you that Figgy arguably deserved it more but I don't think Umar's shot was that bad. I think Chito's title shot against O'Malley was less deserved.

Oh yeah for sure and it was unfair to Aljo and merab IMO

I will say that Merab's performance against O'Malley was a little bit of a disappointment but maybe I underestimated O'Malley as I expected a Merab five round sweep.

His performance against Yan is one of the best in the division in the last few years though, insane fight. He looked like a terminator in that one.

Hilarious coming from Firas, you can just replace merab with GSP.
Nah GSP was way different, he'd actually hold you down and pass your guard whereas Merab is far more likely to let you back up only to take you down again.

Firas loves BJJ so didn't surprise me he's not a fan of Merab's style who prefers wrestling scrambles rather than pass or play guard.

Chito's shot was a joke and a way to pump up OMalley for a bit longer before he got exposed.

It was a disgrace really.

And I like Chito.

Finishers like Aspinall are of course fantastic to watch

I'm not myopically obsessed about a guy needing to finish, especially when you have 2 guys fighting for the title (I.e. likely the 2 best guys in the division) you are less likely to see finishes because you have 2 guys who are at the very top of their game and the gane. And more so in the lighter divisions where finishes just happen less.

It's a bit of a dog whistle to me like guys who just bitch and moan at every single rematch as if it is always a bad thing. Some rematches are the right call and it's great to see.

Not all fights with finishes are amazing, not all fights that go the distance suck.
