Don’t mistake Merab’s humility as him being afraid of the Umar matchup.

He knows he would wipe the floor with him. He just doesn’t think it’s fair that he had to fight Moraes, Aldo, Yan, Cejudo and O’Malley to win the title whereas Umar has only beaten Sandhagen and now he gets a shot.

There’s levels to this. Merab made Yan and O’Malley look stupid. He made them look like they don’t belong in there with them.

Umar is good on the feet and will give him trouble but did you see how thick Merab’s back is? He will wrestle fuck Umar with ease.

Merab will reign that division for a while. He has a high IQ, is strong, can wrestle and has insane cardio. He didn’t even break a sweat during that fight. He’s not gonna be beaten for a while.

You can put your delusional hopes aside, whether it’s Umar or anyone else. Merab is a monster…. And you’re gonna have to deal with it for some time.

I think Umar is more skilled than him and has a more varied skillset, but he cannot match the grappling cardio of Merab. No one can even if they are given the same stack Merab is using.

The way I see it playing out is a DEC win for Merab by constantly putting Umar on the backfoot and on the defense through pressure and wrestling backed by unlimited cardio.

Umar cant hurt him on the feet. He CAN outwrestle Merab, but only until his cardio depletes, then its Merab from there.

Still an intriguing fight, I want to see how the Nurmagomedovs gameplan for someone like Merab.

Unfortunately for merab, the sport has never been fair. And it never will be. As much as I do think Umar is clearly skilled enough to be a title challenger, yes he absolutely is getting a bit of last name privilege. But it's also not entirely that. Umar ran into the same issue Islam did where ranked guys are just outright refusing to fight them on their rise. That can't be held against them. So when they finally do get a top guy and absolutely dominate them you just need to accept they're ready. Because nobody else is willing to fight them, so that has to be taken as they chose to step out of the way and let them past them in the pecking order.

The only way I can see Umar finishing Merab is by Sub. Umar isn't a hard hitter and Merab has an uncanny ability to roll with punches, or maybe not roll because he is constantly moving so when you do catch him he is already on the way out or around and the strike isn't as powerful.

Hes nowhere close to as good a striker or submission artist as Umar his only edge maybe in cardio and agression but they are both top notch there.

I think they tangle back and forth evenly with the grappling for the fight but Umar will outpoint him by kicking him repeatedly from the outside all night long.

Probably a wide UD for Umar based on activity 49-46.

Disagree. Merab knows it. He avoided the question and keeps claiming a non wrestler should be next. I rooted for Merab and was chuffed he humbled Sean. But he definitely fears Umar.

He is definitely past his prime. Henry was competitive with Merab early on but that pressure is too much.
If you're asking me whether prime Cejudo would have been able to win? Idk, man. The question here is which bantamweight would be able to outlast Merab and I can't think of many.

Yep. That is Merab's path. He's gotta make it a chaotic, ugly fight at a high pace that Umar can't keep up with. Umar needs to find a way to slow the pace down, which I imagine will be by trying to get his back and suck minutes off the clock that way. It's a really interesting fight.
