We can't get rid of it.

We used to hold it because our currency is backed by it, and amassed huge reserves because of that, but that came end decades ago. Unfortunately though since its still held by other govts across the globe, and numerous investment institutions (some of the too big to fail guys), the US can't sell off its massive gold reserves without causing huge worldwide economic disruptions (a mess which it might have to clean up) when the price of gold tanks as a result.

I believe he said he's supporting an initiative, because that is what is offered. He's been very clear if you have been paying attention. He supports the 15 Week standard that 90%+ of Europe has adopted. He's said it many times.
