Just how insanely good is Craig Jones?

Doesn’t matter who you train under in a sense

That instructor doesn’t carry around a magic bag of sprinkles where you all of a sudden are able to do exactly what they do

It’s really up to the individual to make the most of what they are taught

Most MMA fans are generally disdainful of coaches.

They don't like giving credit to ANYONE not in the cage, and love to try and bury a team even if they had one bad night, as if they were always worthless/overrated.

Just a kneejerk reaction. Def different to how it's percieved in Boxing.

No one would ever say Anatoly Lomachenko dont know what he's doing.

Obviously he's an incredible grappler but I almost think guys need to be taking more of a risk to get up or try a hail mary off the bottom (at least JDM did)

Like I'm only a purple belt (probably brown level no gi) and I could survive a round on the ground with some pretty high level guys if my focus is just on not getting finished, but I'm not winning doing that.

I would hire a guy that has at least 2 or preferably 3 types of grappling arts at world class levels. JDM defended the wrestling single leg so Islam switched the inside leg outside and went for a hybrid Judo trip you need to be ready for that sort of fuckery
Tbh, that’s all BJJ fundamentals, should be taught in the beginners class. Nice thing about BJJ is that it includes everything that judo and wrestling also has and even more.
It went to decision because JDM trained a million hours of Brabo choke defense. If he didn't, we would have saw a Brabo choke finish.
Maybe the brabo didn’t work because JDM wasn’t wearing a gi jacket?😉😂

I remember when Wanderlei was getting LNP'd by Arona in the second fight, and he got so frustrated he just beasted him up into the air on pure rage alone, and got up.

That's the kind of commitment to winning I wanna see.

the Dagestani weakness is strong thappad and the lacking brace defence #PowerSlap is the perfect style to counter

Poatan realize + exploit this to Ankalev now he is champion again

send Craiguru 2-3 years India and forget

Craig is insanely good, maybe even the goat. He completely cracked the code on how to beat Dagestani wrestlers. Nobody else could have coached Australian champs to an earth-shattering 0-3 record against Islam.

The next challengers for Khamzat and Islam’s belts should hire Craig Jones for sure. I’m excited to see if he can continue the magic and extend the streak to 0-4 or even 0-5.

Sometimes it's hard for fans to see the value of a coach when their fighter losses, because the counterfactual of "he would have lost worst or more quickly" is still on the side of losing.

It's just the inverse of a coach being useless *despite* their fighter winning (ala Ronda). Would you say Edmond was a great coach during Ronda's reign? Of course not.

Honestly, I give mad props to JDM for surviving. That was a win, in and of itself, considering the gap between himself and Islam in the grappling department. He obviously trained very hard for those situations, and it showed. The problem is that he was never going to retain the belt by surviving

Craig Jones definitely deserves some credit imo, but these Aussies should train with wrestlers as well imo so they can defend takedowns on top of scrambling and defending subs.
I just like his playful feud with them.

No one else has the balls to consistently mess w them like this but still manage to keep it friendly.

It's entertainment.

I do as well -- I'm a Jones fan. I'd love to see him train with Khabib and crew to add to his arsenal as a coach.

I believe the idea was if you can survive a round or 2 on the ground you can catch him with something the next round

Islam is a finisher and has put away some very good fighters.

The simple fact that JDM never got finished, despite spending that much time on the ground says *something* about his defensive preparation. Just look at Islam's last 10 fights. Obviously mere 'survival' is not what fighters are aiming for...but the point stands.

I miss before neckbeards exploited the ref’s fears of stand ups. They used to try to finish fights, now they don’t. Now it’s not impressive to not get subbed by one but it once was

Surprise Ali doesn’t take it friendly. His sense of humor is worse than sherdogs own neckbeards.
