This makes perfect sense. The problem is that a majority of Aspinall fans refuse to admit that 1) Jones is old, 2) Jones is not a natural HW and Aspinall is the larger fighter, and 3) Jones is clearly the more skilled fighter.
Once/if Aspinall is able to pull it off, I can guarantee you the narrative will be that Aspinall was always the better fighter that would have beaten any version of Jones and Jones was a decent fighter who lost the moment he faced someone with even attributes. It is what it is-- you can't control what people think, it's just going to be annoying to have to hear that nonsense repeated by masses.
Meh, there will always be some that go that route. A win over the current version of Jones is for sure huge for Tom right now. Unifying the belts vs a GOAT coming off back to back finishes isn't Tom beating an "old washed up LHW". But it's also NOT him beating Jones at his optimal weight, in his prime. That fight can never have happened.
The Jones that ruined Shogun for the belt (and the fights leading up to it) is the best MMA fighter I've ever seen. Aspinall has the tools to be an all time great HW. And the fight is amazing if it happens. But a loss for Jones doesn't change his legacy imo. A win for Tom does change his.
