I think it depends on who is receiving the debt relief. I am a supporter of safety net programs, and a believer that all Americans should have their most basic needs met.
But when I hear this talk about billions of dollars going towards forgiving college debt, it does not sit well with me. College debt is not the result of a basic need, it is an investment in your future. Those who cannot afford college should have programs available to them, but those who have more than enough money to pay for those loans should be doing so.
I know people who make 6-figure salaries who have been hoping and waiting for loan-forgiveness. Give me a break. Pay back your loan just like the rest of us. If you are earning a high-wage as a result of that investment that you made, then that investment has already paid itself off and the government owes you nothing.
What I am in favor of, is taking measures to ensure affordable college prices moving forward for all Americans. State college and community college tuition should be capped at a more reasonable amount, making it an option for anybody who has the interest and drive to get it done.
But there are people, like many of us here I'm sure, who worked very hard to pay off the investments that we've made in ourselves while many others acted like fools and made very little progress, even though nobody was holding them back but themselves. I am not in favor of bailing those people out with tax money that could be going to help those who are actually in need.
