Rumored Jack Della Maddalena not fighting anytime soon

Them Aussie tax brackets are ridiculous...

45% of 180,001 is >80k, plus 61,200 on top, 140k in just tax on 180,001 earned... is that for real?

Edit - I just caught the "45% on amount greater than..." so it's not quite as bad as what I have above, and I don't really care to figure out the math any further, but it's still a damn lot.

32.5% on the first dollar is still quite high, especially when you consider that fighters have to pay their coaches, manager, etc.

And given that 100 Aussie dollars are only worth 66 USD, the 37% and 45% brackets come much quickly than expected.

Right. Having re-read the brackets my first calculation was clearly wrong, but it's definitely still a pretty penny. Not hard to see why guys would want extra to help even that out.

Holy shit. They tax you that much?

Australians get taxed on worldwide income the same as locally sourced income if they are a tax resident of Australia. Considering this guy is fighting out of Perth and is an Aussie, the taxes are going to be the same as he will owe the ATO tax on everything. Literally won't make a difference in tax if he fights in the US or Aus.

Source - I'm an aussie with an extensive understanding of tax

Probably isn't great for foreigners though but that's the same in any tax nation and a lot of countries have DTA agreements to handle this
JDM isn't complaining, it's allegedly his potential opponents who are.

Anyway despite those tax brackets, there are a variety of offsets and exemptions which will lower the effective tax rate for a non-resident professional athlete competing in Australia.
It will still be expensive, but it won't be as bad as those brackets some twitter dude posted.

Australian residents have different tax rates than posted. Here are our current rates :

Still high, but lower than foreign residents.
Also for high income earners these are set to change drastically next year, lowering our net tax payable significantly.

Remember that we have no state taxes on top of this. So for a regular person working as an employee, the rates here are all we pay income tax wise.

Reading is fun duh mental!

Fuck the UFC and Dana. Hope all the fighters smarten up and say fuck the peanuts when you can make dollar dollar bills yall.

can't blame them, flying to Australia fuckin sucks. +11hrs on a flight that has no layovers? unless you're tiny or flying first class it's going to be miserable

I mean it's pretty stupid if you're on a contract and get paid a static #, but then the UFC decides to host an event in a country that taxes foreigners to hell. I bet UFC probably likes Australian events to get guys to reject fights. Doesn't make sense to get paid less to do the same thing just because the country you're fighting in.

why would they want guys to reject fights?

you won't make more money anywhere else in MMA. i don't think you or a lot of people realize that the "pay the fighters more" argument isn't about them making peanuts, it's about them not making a certain percentage of the total revenue in comparison to the UFC's slice.
