Volk did well staying out of any real sub danger though. Islam isn't really a relentless TD guy. He gets TDs in most fights, but if someone defends, he's pretty quick to let it go and just strike with them.

I'm not even sure JDM has much of a striking advantage. He has better hands, but Islam controls distance really well with kicks, then boxing range is also close enough to be clinched and taken down too. JDM scrambles well and is probably better in the middle range, but he might have some trouble keeping it in that range for extended periods.

I wouldn't be surprised if 170 Makachev comes in like a gorilla and controls JDM in typical Islam fashion. People seem to think he's going to come into this bout some kind of smaller and weaker man. I really don't think so. Its kind of odd to have a definitive opnion about this fight when nobody's ever seen this version of Islam. We don't know what he is at 170. Such an awesome fight to find out though.

this is so far the only post worth reading here but few points of contention.

Volk was smaller in the end and easier to handle unless you personally would say his TDD is better than JDM? thoughts on that? only problem with wrestling Volk was his complete lack of neck.

but JDM is bigger and a lot more to handle than Volk is so how would you contest that point?

plus your point on JDM's hands well a smaller Poirer with less reach is purely mostly a boxer Islam did at time struggle with his hands despite 4-1 rounds (if that even) and Poirier is more worn out and slower unless you'd say his boxing skillset is better than JDM as well.

Islam has a wicked roundhouse but naturally it worked for shorter fighters whereas JDM is 5'11 so I dont see him using so many of those nor does he use leg kicks.

Honestly I think Islam is going to make it look pretty easy and probably finish him. People are overestimating the size difference, and JDM has not shown himself to have a genuine p4p level skillset so far. Generally when guys come up from a lower weight class to fight the champ its because they consider that champ to be a soft touch.
