Islam vs JDM next!

They got 5-6 months to work on sub defense.
that's not my point. It was real easy for JDM to just get up when he wanted to, he had no fear of Belal snatching is neck.I just dont think he can do the same when there's a sub threat, you have to create more space, be more careful and spent more energy.

Im not saying he'll have trouble with Islam, I have no idea. I'm just pointing out that he cant do it the same way.

BTW, Crazy he was being beaten by Burns til that knee and now he's a champ

Jack has a massive core and is functionally strong as an ox. He defended hard body drags and switches and got up from tough positions. Belal is strong as hell, as strong or stronger than Islam at 170.
Didn't Belal say that Khabib and Islam ragdolled him in practice? Islam's grappling IQ and submissions are far superior to Belal's. JDM is tough but he might be one of the more favorable top WW matchup for Islam.

Complementary of teammates / training partners isn't something I take to heart as axiomatic.

Topuria is the loser in this scenario.
He won't get as much credit if he beats Islam if/after he loses to JDM.

I don’t know exactly about rounds right now fellas, I’ve had some whiskeys and beers tonite.
It was just my overall feeling, if it was pride judging criteria maybe Belal could’ve won. But yeah, Jack Della maybe won more rounds. Maybe I was just rooting for Belal, even though I don’t agree with his political views, I just think he’s a great fighter and deserves much more respect than he gets.

I like Belal but I think JDM won pretty clearly. Belal won 2 rounds max, he could’ve stole the fight but rd 5 got away from him pretty handily.

Which three rounds did Belal win?

topuria hasn't done enough to deserve a LW title shot
and islam shouldn't have to fight another FW

happy for islam tonight
Shavkat has a 7 fight win streak in the division and won a title eliminator.

And he'll be ready by the time JDM wants to fight again.

You want Islam to jump the queue?

Khabib said you need to earn your shot in a new division before fighting for the belt.

People forget how close his first fight with FW Volk was. And even an older Poirier put up a pretty good fight with Islam. A 28-year old big, prime WW with clearly improved TDD and very solid striking won't be an easy fight at all.
It won't be at all, it's a seriously tough fight for Islam and some of the punches Belal took (what a chin), I don't think Islam could possibly take BUT Islam will look much bigger than he does for his LW fights and stronger.

Jack's TDD was solid against Belal, but there's a world of difference between Belal's takedown attempts and Islam's creative takedowns. Belal really believed in his striking too much imo, when he really should have shot much, much more.

Well, Islam will vacate the 155 belt then, I assume?

Btw, he should fight his way through the rankings, not a straight title shot. If Topuria did nothing at LW, as such was Islam's argument, why does Islam get to go straight for the belt? Because he had more defenses? If so, that falls flat as Islam Makhachev called for the Leon fight as soon as he beat Volkanovski 1, in his first title defense (so Islam never cared about jumping straight to the title of the next division unless the guy was Topuria, whom he fears). If he doesn't want to have the commitment of making 155 anymore, because he weighs around 180lb and fights in LW around ~175lb on night's day, i.e, a very big LW that gets up to ~ 20 lb the division weight during day's night.... Then he would vacate the belt. But no champ champ unless he makes through the rankings. What has he done in 170? Nothing.

His extreme cut and weight gain is partially the reason he dominated at LW, unless he faces an opponent who's very well rounded and Islam can't grow much from [the weigh] in to the [night of the fight]. That's why his fight vs Volk 1 was a tough one, because Islam was smaller than he normally would want to be in LW — in Australia, the time between the weigh in and the actual match is way shorter, so Islam fought closer to an actual LW there. He didn't that weight advantage he was used to. Plus, he was against someone from the lower category but who's also big for FW (Volk)... And as a general rule of thumb, the lower the category, the more skilled they are. In Abu Dhabi, that time between the weigh in and the fight night is extended; that's why Islam looked way bigger in the second fight vs Volk, who by the way was there on a 2 weeks short notice.

Topuria weighs the almost the same as Islam, according to the sources we have. He is also ~175lb and is expected to have his optimal fighting weight just at ~173 lb in LW at the night of the fight. Islam saw how he KO'd a Volkanovski whom, under the same conditions, gave him his toughest match up and knows that buffing himself a little over his weight is a way easier fight than fighting someone his size but who's well rounded and a huge talent. Illia Topuria.... First guy to call out Islam and Khabib, openly mock them. Say he could beat Islam and that Islam could choose the way he'd like to be beat... But Islam knowing that fight would get way more $, unlike him vs Jack, conceded to Topuria's provocations and wooofff, did want no piece of him, since even tho him vs Jack is not nearly as $, it's a way easier match for him, as Topuria has Islam's number.

Islam's whole "I'll defend it against anyone" was a moment of him pretending to be as brave as Alex Pereira, sadly.

UFC had 3 fights fans want this year, now you can cross one of them off the list. Maybe DDP/Khamzat or Jones/Aspinall can still happen. But yeah this sort of sucks.

Is not better him fight a welterweight instead of lightweight?

Islam weighed less than Moicano in his last title defence.

Not particularly interested in Makhachev vs JDM, or Belal for that matter, would like to see Topuria vs Makhachev first because he wouldnt be moving to WW for good.
I'm guessing the UFC feels the same way. They want Islam vs Topuria @ UFC 317, but I'd say JDM winning is the final nail in the coffin for that fight (right now).

There will be negotiations, they won't give into Makhachev right away. They'll probably demand he vacate his title if he's moving up. But none of that will be resolved quickly. Islam almost certainly won't be fighting Topuria @ UFC 317.

So in the mean time we will likely get Topuria vs Oliveira for interim title.

Two ways to look at this, Islam has been fighting compromised at 155 and he’ll look stronger and more resilient at 170. Or maybe he just isn’t big enough for 170. I’ll take islam at his word on the first Volk fight, he said he was very depleted and felt terrible. And he actually did physically look terrible.
Fair point. We'll see which way is correct if they fight. A few fighters like Whittaker did much better in a heavier division. But I've never seen a division champ move up and be a much better fighter against bigger guys. The only example that might come close is Couture moving up to HW when he lost twice to Liddell at LHW. But I think that was a "styles make fights" thing where Randy matched up better against Tim Sylvia than Chuck for reasons other than size.
