Economy Is AI Really Replacing Jobs?

Bold of you to assume they will do anything at all, they're pretty much bought and paid for by corporations like big tech

All of them, this isn't partisan fuckery.

We both come from IT backgrounds and him now being in marketing and production, we know bugger all about construction, lol.
I had started to sell construction materials cos strange stuff.
One company had mainly business to sell stuff for companies, still had opened retail store too. They had intent to get clients, therefore had promised gift cards if you will answer questions.
In reality they didn't had intent to spend a lot.

I was young, a bit cocky and still polite, for me this was a bit fun. I had won 2 their gift cards and discount card too. This was ....they didn't had wanted to pay this, therefore had asked more questions and ...then next session.
He asked why I had such opinions etc.

I didn't had intent to apply for job.
He asked my contacts and I get his card. He asked one question: maybe you want to change your life.
I didn't had called him, he had called and my life had changed.
Life is life.

Hence the acceleration
I think it's really important to understand that spending on AI doesn't equal AI replacing jobs. We'll see how big that difference is when the bubble pops. It's looking really ugly already.

That’s true. I think at some point things might get to bad to continue though

- I honestly can see AI replacing some wristers. People like Tom king and Garth Ennis are awful, honestly a pigeon with a pen would write better comics.

Yes. It will continue to as well. If you have actually tnikered at all with any kind of AI tech you wouldnt even have to ask the question. Microsoft just recently laid off a shit ton of employees cause of AI tech. Thats just one of the bigger companies. Its happening on smale scale levels everywhere tbh.

Microsoft fires 10%+ of it's workforce and is rumored to be firing more next year.

And they now require all employees to use AI.

Microsoft laid off a shit ton people in struggling divisions due to losses. Especially in the video game sector. Don't believe everything you hear. AI replacement sounds better to shareholders than
.. were losing money because the economy is in bad shape.

Trump is 100% ok with H1B visas so don't expect any help there.

My wife said a whole team was cut. They were used to take notes for the doctors while they work but now they've been replaced by AI that can automatically transcribe everything for them while they work. Haven't heard anything beyond that. She works for a large company though so if it happened globally it was probably a lot of workers.
H1B visa's for 100K per visa. If immigrants are that smart, they are worth the 100K price tag. If not, its just tech companies trying to hire cheap labor. If thats the case, Hire American citizens. Otherwise STFU, and cry somewhere else.

When husband came here on an O Visa it was literally because his employer couldn't find anyone in America with the expertise to do the job he needed. So think about that. He expedited the visa within weeks so fuck knows how much that cost.

Microsoft and other faang companies are laying off people to make up for the money they're bleeding due to AI projects not generating revenue. If Open AI is bleeding $5 billion a year what do you think is going on with Microsoft?

AI isn't killing jobs...losing investment in AI is what's killing jobs.

AI will put millions out of work and nothing will be done to help people that lost their jobs.

AI is largely overrated and as far as I can tell that whole sector is a bubble, though if it continues advancing in any meaningful way it will replace many jobs.

That said, what we call AI isn't even actual AI.
Agreed.

I posted this in another thread.... But seems relevant here. The fact of the matter is, these billions have to come from somewhere... Unfortunately it comes at the cost of jobs.

Though Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Google, and Tesla are expected to have spent some $560 billion on AI development by the beginning of next year, their collective revenue from AI comes in at a paltry $35 billion. In the first half of 2025, the Atlantic notes, business spending on AI added more to GDP growth in the United States than all consumer spending combined.

They laid off people to free up money for AI, not because AI replaced all those jobs.

Your average Microsoft worker isn't even using AI anywhere near as much as the public thinks, let alone on device like Microsoft envisions.

People really need to stop and realize that without AI there's a pretty good chance we'd be in a recession already. We've just put it off and will likely have a bigger crash.

Copilot fucking sucks. It cant even format Word documents properly. I tried giving it a simple prompt asking to format the content in last page of one document just like the last page of another doc. After eight attempts I got almost all different outputs that weren't even close to what I wanted.

I could have done the shit myself in half the time.
