There's no such thing as good moderate Dems. Moderate Dems are what got Dems in the position they are in now. No party would ever or should ever be considered "progressive" if Pelosi and Schumer are leading them. All that being said Trump's not draining the swamp. I think two things can be true here.

Getting rid of people within places like the C.I.A. (which has done horrendous stuff around the world) is a good thing but replacing them with what will eventually just be Trump loyalists is a terrible idea.

I'd gamble that a lot of how we wield international influence is through USAID spending. I suspect it's how we grease wheels all over the world. Shutting it down without a really clear idea of the unofficial influence it's being used for is a bad idea.

If I was going to put on my conspiracy hat, here's what I would say -- Elon and Trump are unwittingly being duped into unravelling the soft power mechanisms of the US and irrevocably destroying our ability to shape the modern world. Between Russia and China, they have enough know how and guile to manipulate 2 massive egotists into these actions without making their intentions obvious.

If I take off the conspiracy hat -- I think it's a bad idea for the reasons I said up top.

USAID was used to help fight apartheid in South Africa. Not a conspiracy at all.

However, it is also used as you say to wield soft power. But often to exploit other countries too - such as favorable terms for natural resources, getting a certain type of government in another country, etc.

So it is potentially necessary or can also be used in an insidious ways.
