Can Ronda Rousey in 2013 Do What Brock Lesnar Failed At?

Exactly. What a stupid way to look at it. The guy walked in to the sport at a very late time period, won a HW title and defended it. Helped the sport explode in popularity too.

How many times did dos Santos defend the HW title again?

jds defended it vs cain the same amont of times lesnar did.

i dont like how in this article they imply Lesnars skills were on par with Kimbo and he wasnt a good fighter, He was flawed when it came to taking a punch but he was a champ with two defenses

If she can reign supreme for awhile. Gina Carano was up there in Strikeforce until Cyborg came along and demolished her.

He's not a failure to himself, but for the UFC as a company, he didn't stick around long enough for them to really bank off him big. Similar to his stint in WWE. He was being groomed to be the next big thing and left just as his popularity was blowing up.

What part of he had two bouts of a life threatening illness do you not comprehend? He's come out and said that his body simply can't handle fighting anymore which is why he left. It should have been pretty obvious when he first came back against Carwin that his body couldn't handle it anymore. He didn't screw over the UFC, he made them millions and captured the HW title and tied the record for most title defences. When people become HW champ, they're trying to beat Brocks record. People shit on Brock around here for no reason

In essence, she can do for MMA what Tiger Woods did for golf, what Billie Jean King did for tennis, and what Madonna did for pop music.
Horrible comparisons because she can't do what Tiger did, she can't do what Jean King did, she can't do what Madonna did because she isn't doing anything great... Millions watched golf before Tiger Woods... He expanded it.... Millions watched tennis before Jean King, she expanded it.. She definitely can't do what Madonna did because like 10 other people have...

Another thing is MMA has a limited exposure and isn't thought of as anything great... It's just bad fighting according to people that see it occassionally

I bet this writer thinks Danica Patrick is the face of NASCAR too.

The problem is even if her first 2 fights are a success after that the novelty is over. All of her fights are similar.

brock failed because he couldn't take a punch. not because he was sick.

His sickness forever altered his fighting ability, including taking punches. Nobody was complaining he couldn't take a punch before he got diverticulitis for the first time did they? He showed in the Herring fight that he could throw a good punch standing as well.

Then he got sick and was never the same again. After being sick once with diverticulitis he was still able to successfully defend his title against Carwin and he took a tremendous number of punches from Carwin in that fight without submitting or being knocked out. No other fighter before or since as taken anywhere near that number of punches from Carwin and still beaten Carwin.

Some people argue that Brock only won against Carwin because Carwin fatigued in the second round. They don't take into account that Carwin became fatigued from the number of punches he hit Lesnar with. Carwin was considered the hardest puncher in The UFC at the time. Lesnar was tough enough that Carwin hurt his ability to continue by punching Lesnar more than Lesnar's ability to continue was hurt by absorbing all of those punches!

Ask any fighter this: Would you rather risk getting tired by punching your opponent over and over as hard as you can or would you rather try to win a fight by having your opponent hit you until he is exhausted and then try to submit him?

I think the answer would be unanimous.

Lesnar then got a second bout of diverticulitis and it is in his two fights afterwards that he fought like a weaker, frightened fighter. The diverticulitis took a huge amount of his physical ability as well as doing a lot of psychological damage regarding his mindset during a fight.

As far as that article saying he was "babied by The UFC", nothing could be further from the truth. He was thrown to the sharks from the beginning. He did not fight any easy opponents or "cans' as some people call them.

There's like 4 people outside MMA fans that know who Ronda is.

"The UFC has great athletes. St-Pierre, Silva, Velasquez, Jones, Benson Henderson, etc., are well-proven, fantastic athletes. The unfortunate reality is, however, that no one outside of the MMA world, and MMA beat writers know who these stars are."

Really, I'm not so sure about this. GSP has some big sponsorship deals and is Canada's biggest and most well-known athlete (arguably) while Silva also has some big sponsorship deals. Hyperbole, I think.

and the reem is known all over the world. the market for wmma is very small, no one cares when there is no competition. cyborg and carano where interesting, ronda is boring. who would like to watch if frank mir would submit amateurs in the ufc? right, no one. but that is the way rona fights. vs ultra cans cause wmma has no talented fighters, and cyborg would murder her.

Anderson also has a lot more followers than many NBA stars, NFL stars, ect.

Not bad considering he only tweets in some foreign language no one understands.

How did Lesnar fail? He got the UFC their biggest buy-rates until he had to retire.

Christ the amount of hate he gets is worse than the mindless Jones hate.

"B-b-b-ut they're so arrogant! And they didn't fight in Pride, so you have to hate on every disagreeable move they make!"

ironically Lesnar won more HW title fights in a row than any HW has since.. Tim Sylvia won it from arlovski and defended against arlovski and monson.

statistically it's the toughest division to KEEP the belt. With no one but Brock and Tim getting more than 1 defense in a row in the UFC ever. (technically Randy got 2 defenses in a row but it's kinda bullshit cause he left the UFC after winning the belt and lost a fight then came back and defended against pedro rizzo twice in a row)

so technically only 3 fighters ever have gotten 2 defenses in a row in the UFC HW division and only 2 of those were actually back to back to back fights

edit: now i know people can argue "well if cain had fought the guys lesnar fought" yea? well maybe if lesnar had fought the guys sylvia fought he'd have 6 defenses. So we can play that game with just about everyone
