I don't understand the UFC. They have a huge draw in Aspinall that has the potential to transform into the face of the HW division and string together several title defenses in a row. Instead, they are fucking around with this Jones vs Miocic "cough* super fight. It might pay off short term for the company but whatever Jones has left to offer is limited. It is time to move on and Miocic has no business fighting for a title. What a joke.
You're right, you don't understand.
Let me break it down the other way.
Dana and the UFC truly believe Jones is the best fighter ever and in the world. There is a chance, no matter what you may believe, that Jones smokes Tom and ruins his star power before retiring. Why would the UFC want that? Even if it's a 10% risk, why risk it at all? Let Jones fight Stipe, sell that fight, let Jones and Stipe retire into the sunset and then let Tom go on his run that you believe he will go on.
Having Jon forego Stipe (a fight he wants) and risk him beating Tom before retiring doesn't make any sense. It's a one fight pay off that if Tom loses, you diminish your investment returns on every fight Tom ever fights again. His star power immediately diminishes because he couldn't beat a 37-38 year old LHW that moved up and everyone just returns to "ah, HW is thin." You already have a one fight payoff with Stipe and JJ without tampering with Tom's future earning potential.
Most of you folks think Jones has no chance against Tom. I guarantee you he does. He may be older and slower, but he has a chin and is one of the most dangerous fighters to ever do it and his grappling could be very problematic for a British heavyweight who's rarely had to fight for more than a minute. Even if you 100% believe in Tom's ability to win that fight, it's a high risk endeavor.
Now, ask yourself: Why would the UFC take a high risk endeavor and risk future marketing potential so that Tom can potentially (and probably) beat a 37-38 year old LHW transplant? I know it's Jones, but still, you'd be diminishing Jones legacy if he loses and not really enhancing Tom's potential moving forward. It's a lot of loss/risk for not much return. Tom beating Jones as he approaches 40 after moving up to HW is about as impressive when/if Jones beats Stipe, imho.
