Rumored Alex Pereira Fighting in March?; Rogan Says Poatan using Ramadan return date to mess w/ Ankalaev

Ank is the #1 contender bro, the only actual person who deserves a TS right now. There is no Joe Shmos left for Alex to defend against. It's Ank next .

Too bad Uncle Aev doesn't seem very receptive to this matchup unless it's on his terms.

Remember when Jones accepted the fight with Shogun in the Octogon when rogan asked him if he'd take the fight on a months notice? then he took the fight on a months notice and won?

I Think it's because Jones was confident he could win and he wanted the title badly. Seems that Ankalaev does not feel the same way.

Wasn't there a video of Poatan converting to the Islamic faith?

(it just adds a bit more weird to the thread title / Rogains comment if he did)

Merit is dead AF in this sport lmfao.

Being the #1 contender just makes him the first among contenders. They are not above the champion. They are in fact explicitly below them.

You guys seem very confused about the pecking order.

He needs to cut weight anyway and should only do light sparring during the last 2 weeks or so.

You can fast and fight just fine.
Ramadan isn't just a food fast; it's a water fast too. Even cutting weight you need to be able to take in water regularly, if only in very small amounts, and even light sparring is out if you can't drink. And, of course, you're not supposed to just sleep all day during Ramadan, so flipping day/night cycles doesn't work either.

Not that the UFC should avoid booking Pereira because of Ramadan - obviously they shouldn't - but training seriously, even end-of-camp training, is not something that can reasonably be expected of an observant muslim fighter during Ramadan.

regarding my post above:

"Pereira underwent a profound transformation and converted to Islam in 2015 after a deep exploration of its teachings. A video surfaced online of him reciting the Shahada (ritual to accept Islam) with the guidance of Sheikh Taqi Al-Din, the director of the Federation of Muslim Associations in Brazil"

Video I mentioned is below, there are obv longer versions but this one (18sec) is an easy to post version.

He has since given up on that stuff though.

There are so many exceptions in Ramadan that it's WELL ESTABLISHED RAMADAN IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO DUCK THE CHAMP. Let's go ahead and drop the Ramadan excuses. It's over. If ankalaev wants the belt, got get it. Pereira holds the belt, and all the cards. It's up to Ankalaev to sacrifice everything to get it of STFU.

Has he?

Only thing I could find saying that was two tiktok videos, that would not load / open.

I remember saying he was muslim to someone on here and a few posters linked me to some thing showing he wasn't anymore.

Pretty sure he gave it up a long time ago.

Also, just found this:

Vadim nemkov is unhappy with pfl right now and hasn't fought in a year.... Just saying
I think real reason at least now he's not fighting Ank he doesn't like him n is doing it as a FU for all the shit talking . Pereria is one of my all time favorite fighters with Fedor n Chuck for me. But he's cleared out division but 1 guy he has to fight him.

Khamzat makes no sense n Bones seems locked in to Aspinall - there's noone else he needs to just beat Ank and be done with it. I don't think its nearly as tough a fight for Pereria as folks are making out. He's a good grappler though isn't world class like other Dagestanis. And it doesn't matter as he stands anyway. I would be .ich more worries about guy u mentioned honestly

Yes, he has returned to a blend of Christianity and Shamanism. Believes in one God and also spirits. He's halfway on his way to being an Orthodox Christian

Just last year Belal gave an interview about training during ramadan. It's two Dagestani gyms that have introduced the ramadan excuse, i'm glad to see others finally calling it out for what it absolutely is: an excuse.

I actually think it's completely fine to miss a fight for a religious event the afterlife is forever, after all.

But I don't think they should simultaneously have people saying poatan is avoiding anyone or that a title fight should be reserved for ankalaev.

Even last year when ank fights January, turns down UFC 300, and Alex fights again at 303, why should ank get to wait while Alex has to defend twice? Alex would be expected to fight on 3 month turn around everyone is okay with the challenger having a lay off 3 times as long.

Bruz, the UFC said Ank was already booked to fight.
You're one of my favourite posters here. I know you're not stupid... you're actually one of the most intelligent posters here or you wouldn't be one of my favourites.

What you're saying here is:

1. You're taking the UFC at their word (which is a bad idea at the best of times, let alone when they're trying to defend one of their stars).

2. Perreira's fight was quickly thrown together in a month after the Ank fight was announced, there was no crossover between the two planning stages, and that Perreira didn't have any input or pull to make the Ank fight happen.

One of those is stupid. One of those is hella stupid. You're neither, so don't come at me with this bullshit.
What's stopping Alex from fighting in March, which is about right for his usual 4 month break, then fighting Ank 2-3 months after Ramadan? And again, it will be that sort of scheduling. It's not going to be Ramadan for Ank and then immediately he'll want to fight.
I don't know. Let's find out four months after March when Ank isn't being offered the fight. Clearly, it's not a priority for him and might not even be something he wants to do.
Why are you making it out like he isn't still happy to do this? It's not a case of Ank next or Ank never gets a title shot lol.

After seeing Perreira fight the number 8 guy instead of Ank, when both fights were being made at the same time, and then seeing the bullshit about him jumping weight classes, my faith in him is as low as it can get.

The reality is that Alex is ready to fight again, and the UFC is ready for him to fight again. Ank is busy with non-fighting related things. That's his choice, of course, but there's no reason for the champ and the UFC to put things on hold for that.
One, he could have arranged to fight Ank earlier.

Two, yes, there is a reason for the champ to put things on hold to fight a contender that he seems to be avoiding and to silence critics who are starting to think he's a manufactured champion. If that's not a priority for Alex and the UFC, then he's going to face criticism for it.
