Why doesn't Frank Mir get the same overrated BJ Penn love?

I can't hate on anyone that fights at their level for my entertainment. They've both had bad losses and both have had great wins.

When Mir broke Nog's arm, my jaw dropped. He's had other great finishes too, but that scramble was nuts.

Please post Mir, headphones gif

While I'm sure some are fans, I'm willing to bet that many BJ fans think Frank Mir is overrated. Or worse.

But what they don't realize is how similar these two are.

Both are 37.

Both made their UFC and MMA debut in 2001.

Both won their first UFC title in 2004. They both won these titles in their 9th ever fight.

As all BJ nuthuggers will tell you. BJ BEAT MATT HUGHES! Well Frank beat a then undefeated 16-0 Tim Sylvia.

Both were stripped of their titles.

Both have fought a who's who of MMA history.

Both have shown up out-of-shape/unmotivated for fights.

Both have similar average records: 16-10-2 and 18-11.

Both started training at Jackson/Wink late in their careers.

Both got busted by USADA.

So why is Frank Mir not talked of as a MMA deity? Oh wait, he did not fight Machida at heavyweight! Silly me! That must be it!

For you BJ fans who don't think Frank is as great as BJ, tell us why? The same way you guys don't think Frank is all that great is the same way we reality based MMA fans view BJ.

People hate Mir, he is the reason Fedor was never in the UFC.

Back in the day, Nog was coming to the UFC as a champion of PRIDE..... He was unstoppable. He did what he does and won the belt.

Fedor at this same time was watching, waiting, wanting, he needed to know what would happen.

Mir vs Nog happens, and Fedor knew if Nog won, he could sign and we would finally see the GOAT HW fight in the UFC.
Fucking MIR KO's Nog Clean.............

Dream over.

I like how he walked away. Pretty bad-ass.

Mir is the most overrated fighter there is and a habitual cheat with PEDs

Frank lived and died by the sword. BJ is constantly full of excuses and his mother showing up to a hearing obviously doesn't help. Their records may reflect the same but their conduct as competitors does not.

Penn at one point in his career was the best in the world (in all organizations), Frank frankly was not (even when he was the champ).

With that said, I respect Frank mir.

Penn is underrated if anything. WW champion, fought Machida...

People love BJ Penn so much because at his best, he was GOAT status. That causes everyone to forget that at his worst he was terrible.

I don't think there is a fighter in the history of the sport who showed as much potential and fell so short of it.

People see what he could have been--what he should have been--and they overlook what he was.

Mir had good performances, but never showed the potential for greatness that Penn did.

Penn should have had a career that is mentioned in the same breath as Anderson, GSP, and Fedor. But people need to let it go.
very well said

Both are severely overrated and have embarrassing records.

Yeah I said it.
You're not wrong. Both have achieved a great but their records aren't anything to write home about. Randy's wasn't that great either IIRC

More than 10 years later, BJ still gets a lot of credit for his initial UFC run, which was very impressive. He gets a pass for his second run at WW because he was always undersized and somewhat made up for it by putting together a half decent title run at LW. Once he started to decline, the narrative simply became "He's getting older, prime motivated BJ would have won those fights" (and maybe he would have).

People forget about the fact that the entire community pretty much had Frank completely written off after the accident. He broke his femur and took a long time to recover. When he came back, he looked fat, sloppy and not at all like his former self. So there was a period of about 2 years where everyone thought Frank was done. Then he racks up some impressive wins again, it looks like he's back, but for all his impressive wins post accident, he has an equal number of losses. And nobody said after any of those losses that "prime" Mir pre-accident would have won those fights, because the fact is that he wouldn't have, he became a better fighter after the accident (if you had told anybody in 2004 that Mir would actually develop pretty decent stand-up, they would have laughed at you).

The two stories, or rather the way we tell the stories of their careers is just different. BJ will forever maintain an almost mythical status of "Motivated BJ Penn at the right weight class can beat anyone". Mir on the other hand is the HW that came back from a severe injury and managed to get back to the top 10, but not really the top 3.

Personally, I believe Mir deserves just as much credit as BJ. We discount the fact that BJ didn't do fuck all at WW after his first win over Hughes too easily. Sure, some of those fights were extremely competitive (e.g. 1st GSP fight) but the fact remains he lost those fights. Then when you look at his second run at LW, he was dominant, but the fact is there were better LWs at that time. I would have loved to see him in Bushido and later Dream rather than fighting Stevenson or Sherk. But as I said in the first paragraph, no matter what happens, people will always think of his first run in the UFC when they think of BJ and use that to paint a better picture of his whole career than perhaps it deserves.

People like who they like. I think both guys have shown some hints of great things and also crashed and burned. These guys are inconsistent guys who can be lazy with good skills. They are both ego maniacs in my opinion. I find BJ only slightly less annoying than Frank. They are both former champions and deserve the due respect for that but that's about it.

This is sort of a strange rant to be honest.
For the record, BJ is multiple division champ frank is not, also BJ is Hawaiian, Frank is not. So there you go. Peace:)

BJ Penn is arguably the LW GOAT. Frank Mir has never been considered even a top 5 GOAT HW

Penn could take a punch from a hw, he's never even been knocked down. I just wanted to say that. They are both legends that fight the best guys in the business. Fuck records.

Because BJ was a super talent and one of the most athletic guys weve seen, he gave consensus #2 of all time GSP a tough fight many thought he won, at a higher weightclass, Mir was just never that good, his best win is what ? Staph infected Nog ? Or Tim fucking Sylvia ? Ooooooh he was undefeated at the time ooooh wow

Frank got destroyed basically any time he fought someone good, BJ didnt

Subtle troll attempt I see you made there

I dont hate on Mir , that would be foolish of me and imo its foolish of you to think that BJ Penn´s fans hate on Mir ... it doesnt make any sense !!
What i would just like to say is that BJ was Champion in 2 weight classes ... and if you dont find it remarkable or if you try to discredit in any way , imo you are delusional.

And there you have it.

It didn't take long for the first BJ fan to dismiss Frank.

I'm not even a BJ Fan.

And what exactly were you expecting? You explicitly asked people to defend BJ and put Frank down in this thread.

Not that there was a need to -- BJ has legitimately done more in his career and done so far more impressively than Frank has in his. And those are just facts, and not this level-headed fan BS you are spouting.

Mir does, many see him as a top 5 all-time HW. When he's been stopped the most in UFC HW history and has 4 top 10 wins in his whole career. Whereas Penn has about a dozen (and in 3 divisions) and 5 belts to Frank's 2. Add that Hughes was arguably top 2 p4p at the time Penn beat him and Sylvia was nowhere close to that, and you get a lopsided comparison.
