Why doesn't Frank Mir get the same overrated BJ Penn love?

The UFC marketed BJ like he was a sherdogger who never took training seriously and a lot of ppl bought into that. They talked about him like he was fighting off the couch and if he actually tried he'd be something special so sherdoggers appreciated his laziness and saw themselves in him.

Frank gets a ton of love. People on here talk him up like one of the greatest all time at heavyweight and he really isn't.
This. I mean, to say otherwise suggests you aren't paying attention.

Frank gets love but he does not get the type of blind love that makes excuses for his flaws. Being "unmotivated" is a negative trait yet BJ fans have twisted it into a legitimate reason why he lost certain fights.
Yes he does. People were pissed off at USADA based solely on Mir's testing failure instead of being pissed off that Frank failed his test.

I thought everyone loved Frank Mir despite PED use and hated Anderson. Now everyone hates Frank and loves BJ? Damn you Sherdog. Make up your singular, one-voice mind!

he's still fighting in main events or co-main events against title challengers, and is in with a good shot at being in the ufc hall of fame despite being likely to retire setting the record for most losses inside the octagon (he's joint on 11)

i don't really know why he's being compared to bj penn, it's apples and oranges but i think he gets the appropriate amount of respect

bjs never been ko'd, hes never turtled up in a ball from strikes, hes never acted cocky as hell and hes never been popped for juice.

and Penn made short work out of Hughes in the rubber match but, I think you missed the point of my post. Matt Hughes as a fighter, his skills and accomplishments have always been respected by most fan's so for BJ to lose to him didn't tarnish his rep in the same way Mir losing to Brock did. Lesnar never had that kind of respect as a fighter.

TS: you forgot to mention BJ gifted us what McG couldn´t deliver....

2 division champion = badass

that earns you love

There's really a cult-aspect to BJ nuthuggery.

I never said BJ fans hated Frank.

I only said that surely there are BJ fans (among the many that exist) who don't think much of Frank Mir despite being similar to BJ. And even if they like Frank, why don't they treat him as a god like they do BJ?

Then again many BJ fans think a 25-2 fighter who avenged both his defeats, BEAT MATT HUGHES TWICE, and defended a title 9 times can't hold a candle to BJ. Said fighter also beating BJ twice.

While I'm sure some are fans, I'm willing to bet that many BJ fans think Frank Mir is overrated. Or worse.

But what they don't realize is how similar these two are.

Both are 37.

Both made their UFC and MMA debut in 2001.

Both won their first UFC title in 2004. They both won these titles in their 9th ever fight.

As all BJ nuthuggers will tell you. BJ BEAT MATT HUGHES! Well Frank beat a then undefeated 16-0 Tim Sylvia.

Both were stripped of their titles.

Both have fought a who's who of MMA history.

Both have shown up out-of-shape/unmotivated for fights.

Both have similar average records: 16-10-2 and 18-11.

Both started training at Jackson/Wink late in their careers.

Both got busted by USADA.

So why is Frank Mir not talked of as a MMA deity? Oh wait, he did not fight Machida at heavyweight! Silly me! That must be it!

For you BJ fans who don't think Frank is as great as BJ, tell us why? The same way you guys don't think Frank is all that great is the same way we reality based MMA fans view BJ.

Mir is an intellectual.

Penn is a fat bro.

BJ Penn actually dominated his division for a period.

Given that BJ cultism has poked its head here on Sherdog, I'm bumping this thread.

Two similar fighters yet one is deified while the other is viewed in a way that is proportional to his resume.

Everyone thinks BJ is great because he lost a decision to Machida.

Well, Penn was a far better fighter and still remains the only genuine two weight champion in the sport (Anderson has a small claim to it, but it's murkier waters with him).

Might have something to do with him suffering more brutal beat downs than Penn.

Well this hasn't aged well.

BJ has accomplished more and has dominated his opponents more while having been dominated less.

This hasn't aged well part 2.

I don't even think BJ has even been dropped before, and he's fought almost entirely much bigger guys..

Penn has never been knocked down.

Frank would work Fedor over

To be fair, I needed to include this one.
