Why doesn't Frank Mir get the same overrated BJ Penn love?

Not to disagree entirely with TS, because I think the gap between the two is closer than a lot of people might admit, but Mir's been beaten up pretty badly on more occasions than Penn. And by lower ranked fighters, too. Penn also has a higher number of high quality wins.

While I'm sure some are fans, I'm willing to bet that many BJ fans think Frank Mir is overrated. Or worse.

But what they don't realize is how similar these two are.

Both are 37.

Both made their UFC and MMA debut in 2001.

Both won their first UFC title in 2004. They both won these titles in their 9th ever fight.

As all BJ nuthuggers will tell you. BJ BEAT MATT HUGHES! Well Frank beat a then undefeated 16-0 Tim Sylvia.

Both were stripped of their titles.

Both have fought a who's who of MMA history.

Both have shown up out-of-shape/unmotivated for fights.

Both have similar average records: 16-10-2 and 18-11.

Both started training at Jackson/Wink late in their careers.

Both got busted by USADA.

So why is Frank Mir not talked of as a MMA deity? Oh wait, he did not fight Machida at heavyweight! Silly me! That must be it!

For you BJ fans who don't think Frank is as great as BJ, tell us why? The same way you guys don't think Frank is all that great is the same way we reality based MMA fans view BJ.

Because BJ's losses came from top 3 fighters the weight class ABOVE his or the champion of his weight class. No one goes up and fights the very best of a weight class above theirs other than BJ. He has huge balls. If he was a pussy like most fighters his record would be much better. New to a MMA, bro?

Cool stats, thanks. And yeah, even though I'm not a real fan of either in my mind I always placed BJ waaay above Frank so something to think about.

Penn never fell off a bike

BJ lost to champions, former champs, and guys bigger than him.

BJ went up in weight and won a 2nd belt!!!!! That feat has not been repeated at the lower weights, only The natural, Captain America, Randy Couture has done better by winning in HW and LHW multiple times.

Frank Lost to champs and bums

I'm not a BJ fan but his fighting spirit and willingness to challenge at different weights is an endearing quality. Not to be scoffed at. Mir didn't have that option but that's not BJs fault.

Both have had very high highs and very low lows. Both probably should have done more than they did. Wait, what was the question?

Very strange thread. I only skimmed. Lots of assumptions being made.

You seem to have triggered yourself TS.

I personally love both fighters, but I do put BJ Penn above Frank Mir. BJ Penn is one of the GOATs of the sport, Frank is one of the best HW.

-Frank Mir has been finished in 8/11 losses, BJ has been finished in 3/10, 2 of them were by bigger guys.
-Frank Mir has lost to crappier fighters, getting KO'd by Ian Freeman, Marcio Cruz and Brandon Vera is not a good look. The crappiest fighter BJ Penn has ever lost to was Jens Pulver, and that was a close decision, and it was BJ Penn's 4th MMA fight.
-BJ Penn has 3 title defenses to Frank Mir's 0
-HW is one of the weakest divisions of all time, it's basically the senior's division. 155/170 on the other hand are probably the most competitive.
-6/10 of BJ Penn's losses were to larger (170lb) opponents.

Hmm lets see you left out the one thing that actually matters when it comes to fandom. Two completely different personalities, things they said, things they did were completely different. BJ was a little savage who made people bleed alot and drank their blood, he competed at like 5 different weight classes taking on all comers and was just better at stirring up excitement and was flashier in and out of the cage.

BJ gets love because he was is a natural fw/lw who has fought some of the best in the world in multiple divisions. You saw how Conor did against Nate. BJ was fighting guys like GSP, Sherk, and Hughes competitively. Frank is a legend, has some of the best MMA BJJ in the world, and nobody can take that from him.

Both need to stop fighting as soon as possible. Save some face guys

bj cleaned out the lightweight division on an epic run

mir got his clock cleaned by hard hitting heavyweights

Frank Mir didnt beat tim sylvia. Tim sylvias calcium deficiency in his forearm beat him. He bought a cow and drank strait from the teet, never suffered a broken bone again. Plus frank mir is an atheist, a vocal one so fuck him and i hope he burns in hell
Are you not an atheist? What is it that you believe?

I'm a Mir fan, and not a big Penn fan, but I believe if TS cannot see the difference in skill level between the men then he will not understand the difference. BJ at his peak was hammering great fighters. Seriously great fighters. His LW defences in the UFC were crushing.

His record is bad because he took risks and seemingly did not take them seriously.

I agree TS. It's not even that Mir gets hated on, it's more of a BJ nuthugging issue.

Exactly. I'm not suggesting that Frank Mir should be elevated to a status he does not deserve.

I'm just saying that if he BJ is elevated undeservingly, why not Frank?
