Why doesn't Frank Mir get the same overrated BJ Penn love?

While I'm sure some are fans, I'm willing to bet that many BJ fans think Frank Mir is overrated. Or worse.

But what they don't realize is how similar these two are.

Both are 37.

Both made their UFC and MMA debut in 2001.

Both won their first UFC title in 2004. They both won these titles in their 9th ever fight.

As all BJ nuthuggers will tell you. BJ BEAT MATT HUGHES! Well Frank beat a then undefeated 16-0 Tim Sylvia.

Both were stripped of their titles.

Both have fought a who's who of MMA history.

Both have shown up out-of-shape/unmotivated for fights.

Both have similar average records: 16-10-2 and 18-11.

Both started training at Jackson/Wink late in their careers.

Both got busted by USADA.

So why is Frank Mir not talked of as a MMA deity? Oh wait, he did not fight Machida at heavyweight! Silly me! That must be it!

For you BJ fans who don't think Frank is as great as BJ, tell us why? The same way you guys don't think Frank is all that great is the same way we reality based MMA fans view BJ.

Perhaps not. Perhaps yes. But I never hear Frank Mir revered the same way as BJ by BJ fans or fans in general.

They're not related. Being a fan of BJ is not going to affect how you feel about Frank Mir.

The answer is simple. BJ has accomplished more and has dominated his opponents more while having been dominated less.

BJ was the #1 fighter of his division, and the one above, for years.
Mir has never been the #1 fighter of his division in his entire career.

Terrible thread.

Frank gets a ton of love. People on here talk him up like one of the greatest all time at heavyweight and he really isn't.
Frank Mir has the best Jiu Jitsu as a Heavyweight as an American, maybe Josh Barnett but Barnett didnt break Big Nogs arm or Tim Sylvias for that matter. Love him or hate him Frank Mir is ruthless and his standup has improved a great deal.

Not a fan of either but BJ fought way tougher competition.

Not sure but, it might have something to do with Frank getting smashed by Lesnar in their rematch.

People love BJ Penn so much because at his best, he was GOAT status. That causes everyone to forget that at his worst he was terrible.

I don't think there is a fighter in the history of the sport who showed as much potential and fell so short of it.

People see what he could have been--what he should have been--and they overlook what he was.

Mir had good performances, but never showed the potential for greatness that Penn did.

Penn should have had a career that is mentioned in the same breath as Anderson, GSP, and Fedor. But people need to let it go.

BTW, BJ defended his title successfully numerous times, Mir never did so poor comparison.

BJ sucked late in his career. He was beating guys that were considered killers early and his fight style was always a joy. He jumped around in weight classes and carried the lighter weight classes.

Frank fought in a pretty weak division his entire career. He's had some amazing wins and deserves credit as one of the best ever. Doesn't get love because he comes off as an ass hole and doesn't get fans excited. Also been in so many boring fights.

Just my two cents I guess.

Well there is the fact that BJ isn't overrated. There's the fact that BJ has belts at two weight classes. There's the fact that Mir isn't the greatest of all time in his only weight class and the BJ is the greatest LW of all time. Mir get busted for a PED and BJ turned himself in for getting an IV. You draw a lot of similarities but they are circumstantial and draw no conclusion especially not the one you are going for. The biggest problem you have is that Mir has been the undisputed champ once with zero defenses, BJ has won the undisputed title twice and has 3 defenses.

Bj penn could have fought as low as 45 his whole career. He won belts in two different heavier divisions, fought machida at heavyweight and took him to a decision. Name me one other 45er who could take a heavyweight machida to a decision.

Bj penn goat

TS going to get half of Sherdog like this:

Frank Mir has been brutalized a lot worse in his losses. I don't even think BJ has even been dropped before, and he's fought almost entirely much bigger guys. Frank also hasn't ever defended a title and BJ has won titles in 2 weight classes and defended the LW title more than once. BJ isn't the God his fans make him out to be, but he had a very good career.

Penn has never been knocked down.

Frank Mir didnt beat tim sylvia. Tim sylvias calcium deficiency in his forearm beat him. He bought a cow and drank strait from the teet, never suffered a broken bone again. Plus frank mir is an atheist, a vocal one so fuck him and i hope he burns in hell

I agree TS. It's not even that Mir gets hated on, it's more of a BJ nuthugging issue.

BJ is still the consensus best 155er ever, Mir is a probably just about inside the top 10 at HW.
Penn was one of the best grapplers in MMA, but also one of the best strikers in his division. Mir's striking is appalling, and as good as his scrambles are, if you don't jump in his guard, he has very few ways to win. The Big Nog wins were huge, but to counteract that you have fights like Carwin, JDS and Overeem in which he wasn't even competitive
