It all comes down to whether Toms grappling is what its been assumed to be or not. The first round was definitely going Ganes way but it was decently competitive, and on paper at least he has more ways to adjust than Gane does for the rematch. Its an interesting fight.

That's a fair assessment. I expected Tom to utilize his wrestling and submission game in this fight. Either he's not as good as advertised at getting guys down or he bought into his daddy and fans hyping him up as some sort of boxing savant.

I wasnt surprised he tried to strike with Gane initially, and I dont really blame him for testing the waters there for one round since hes been so destructive standing himself and KO'ing Gane would have been by far the most impressive way to get the job done. The issue is the fight ended there and then so we never got to see the full picture. Its a damn shame we never got a RD2 because I feel like that round alone could have pretty much instantly told us about Toms actual level. Clear adjustments were needed and if he is as advertised he would have made them.

People are being dramatic, but make NO mistake Gane looked better and his first round is not his best round. Once a fighter begins to wear down, that's when Gane can really pour it on and get you out of there.


IF Gane can replicate anything close to that first round in a rematch, Aspinall has about 5 minutes in round 2 to either desperately initiate grappling or land a bomb. At first I thought Aspinall had things to change and improve his performance, but it's actually Gane that will benefit more. He knows he can defend the strikes and take some of the power, he knows all of Aspinall tools against a southpaw, he's the one who now is reassured he in fact can out strike Tom and thwart his takedown attempts.

Aspinall can't make strides in his approach if there's a quick turnaround, I believe he only knows how to fight one way. If he stays on the outside he will lose to Gane, so he needs to swing and create exchanges which works against his defensive faults. If you look at his recent wins it's because he lands counter punches. Bladyes and Sergei traded and gave him openings, but if Gane doesn't give him a counter opportunity early, I doubt Aspinall has the experience to really work his way through the fight.


Gane also utilized a nice, sophisticated body attack on Aspinall which went unnoticed. He did everything he needed to, in order to setup a storm in the latter parts of the fight.

Aspinall needs to apply constant pressure, the same way Jones did to create mistakes. But Tom doesn't fight with constant pressure, he likes to move around and is used to fighting slower fighters he can control and dictate exchanges against. Tom didn't mix it up, didn't change levels much, he didn't look that good or look like a world champion fighter. Tom will try and attack the outside leg of Gane when he switches to orthodox, that's the one consistent attack he can implement and stick too. The issue is we don't know if Tom even has the cardio to stick to a consistent attack like that, Tom has never thrown 10 low kicks in a UFC fight, he had 8 in that first round. Gane is a fighter who has absorbed 50+ leg kicks in a single fight, so that also has to be taken into account.


There was certainly a level of exposure that took place in this fight, expectations have massively tempered. Aspinall has to be a dawg, willing to take one to land one. But all through his career he's never had to do that, always faster and able to stay pretty. He should watch the Jones fight, that's my advice. Learn how to apply pressure against a person who isn't stuck in the mud, without putting yourself in danger.



1) Aspinall needs to batter Gane's lead leg in southpaw by using his own outside low kicks from southpaw, the problem is he only has that one weapon from this stance and Gane will see them coming, Gane nearly took his head off with a counter right hook when Aspinall was going for those low kicks.

2) Aspinall wastes way too much energy, Jon was genius in how he slowed the fight to his pace and wasted no movement. Aspinall is very dangerous but he wastes so much energy bouncing around, moving at the waist, darting in and out. I am convinced he has about 8-9 minutes of legitimate danger he can present to most elite guys.

3) Tom controlled the center of the Octagon but when it came to dealing with Gane's lateral movement he looked frustrated and didn't have an answer besides some cute spinning attempts and a few lead hooks. In order to catch Gane he'll need to utilized feints that can setup the left hook but I've never seen him do that against someone who is actually utilizing movement.


Low Kicks, Lead Left Hook, and for goodness sake learn how to change levels to setup your combinations. Your not a good wrestler but at least pretend like it.


Gane prepared really well, and he was only using just enough of his tools to stay ahead, if Tom does significantly slow down he is absolutely cooked. I also believe Gane has a very sturdy chin, although that might not matter if Tom lands heavy. I would bet on Gane in a rematch assuming the odds were still favoring Tom by a good amount. There are just too many assumptions you have to make to really believe in Tom. You have to assume he'll land early, you have to assume his wrestling is above average, you have to assume he can just easily GnP or sub Gane, everything is an assumption. He's never even had to throw kicks or punches deep into a fight, so everything is just hope. That failed TD attempt by Aspinall, was his first attempt since 2022! Tom only has 5 Td's attempts in his entire career, I mean how many times is he really going to shoot if he gets stuffed once or twice? Never in his entire career has he shot more than twice, so it might be a wrap if he can't secure a second or third attempt. Naw the smart money might actually be on Gane here.

I feel like I experienced the fight very differently when I rewatched it without commentary.

To me it seemed close, and Aspinall landed some hard leg kicks and was pressuring him.
I could see Ganes movement slow down in the rematch if he eats hard leg kicks like that.

Aspinall is also more of an opportunistic finisher, so he doesn't necessarily need to win rounds for a decision win, whereas Gane has less power and finishing ability.
