Media What's the best solution to minimize eye pokes?

Does Jim Miller have a valid point?

It's the gloves. You'd have to modify them in a way that would hamper grapplers to stop eye pokes from happening.

That, or come up with some dumb rule about "pawing" at your opponent.

All in all, it's still a pretty rare occurrence. Much like nut shots, it's just an occupational hazard.

One point each infraction, no free pass at fouls, its that simple.

They have the power already, they choose not to.
Exactly. What if the NBA gave each team a free flagrant foul each game with zero penalty?

Or the NFL let the players have one free unnecessary roughness call each game?

Of course they're going to use it.

Jim is quite right and calling it for what it is.

I'm no UFC fighter but I've had plenty of competition in sports where the fingers are exposed and I've never poked anyone in the eye, nor have I had it happen to me. I don't even remember anyone else doing it in the tournaments. It's not something that should happen as often as it does.

I dunno, I think about the DC/Stipe trilogy. If whatever you come up with, doesn't solve the eye pokes in those fights, then it's probably not a solution. I think UFC needs to send a message with unranked fighters first, work it's way up to higher ranks, point deductions.

However, this could be a nightmare of draws and the fighters today are "active" when they fight 2x a year, so we might be spending a whole year for a ton of rematches, which almost creates a worse problem.

The answer is clear.

Upon the signing of your UFC contract you must remove all ten fingers. Well eight and two thumbs.

Like Assassin's Creed assassins, but ten times worse.

Yellow cards 10% deduction of the fighters purse they won't dare poke anyone in the eyes and you know that it's on purpose.

It's the refs that are the problem. Take the points away and stop rationing the mother fuckers. Stop trying to be "friends" with the fighters and use the hammer. If an eye poke led to a guaranteed instant and immediate 1 point in the case of an accidental poke and 2 points if it seems deliberate, fighters might be be more attentive to the rules.

Same with groin shots. The UFC literally seems to be giving out freebies all the fucking time. "Oh hey big fella, please don't do that again, okay?" The refs should be allowed to shit-talk the fighters if they fuck up badly enough. Mic them up too.

Jim Miller says a point and a portion of the purse as punishment. An automatic point deduction only, and 50% of fouls will probably stop. If you take away some purse too, eye pokes will end forever. The injured party - the victim of the foul - shouldn't have to fight the rest of the fight visually compromised.
I'd bet that it wouldn't change a lot of things because most of these eyepokes comes reflexes contrary to what a lot of people here seems to say.

He’s 100% right. It’s that bitch inside Gane that had him stretching his fingers out as far as they’ll go and dancing around the edge of the octagon as Tom closed in for the kill shots. I love his penalty ideas. They need to be harsh.

Multi prong approach.

- 1 point 1st poke
- 2 points 2nd poke

Warning backstage or even in the fight agreement.

Better gloves would help.
Instead of defaulting to flat and allowing to bend,
default to fist and allow to stretch.

I wonder if the reason a lot of people learn bad habits re: fingers sticking out horizontally is because a lot of the time they train in boxing gloves, and you really don't have to worry about your fingers jabbing anyone in training using those?

I mentioned this in a similar thread but I'll repeat it here.

These guys are "professional" fighters. It's THEIR responsibility to control hands and not eye poke. Don't take points, just immediately DQ them on the first offense. Start throwing out aggressive DQs and they'll all stop eye poking overnight.

If the Refs actually had the balls to penalize eye pokers you bet your ass a lot of these guys wouldn't automatically stick their fingers out.

Intentional or not, automatic point deduction, and you have to take one powerslap from the opponent.
