What are you playing? v.9 (Kefka Edition)

Is a bad launch a death sentence for a new IP?

Tried out fear and hunger. That game is brutal and downright mean. I never played anything like this before.
Never heard of this game.. but looking it up it seems like Darkest Dungeon. Have you ever played that?? If you haven’t. I highly recommend if you like difficult, anger inducing gameplay. Haha.

It is way more punishing than Darkest Dungeon. The gameplay is just unfair and broken. DD at least has RNG and you can have some wins. DD is raging inducing while this game isn't

I don't know whether to play persona 5 or Hogwarts, what say you sherbros?

I haven't played "Hogwarts" but it looks like your standard fare third person ARPG. P5 on the other hand, has years of positive feedback built up, whereas "Hogwarts" kind of benefited from being a hot topic, and not sucking for a "licensed" game. I don't hear many people talking about it now. It kind of came and went. I'm sure it's fine, but P5 has had more staying power.

Depends what you want, though. P5 is an unapologetic linear JRPG, with HEAVY anime influences. Might not be your bag. "Hogwarts" seems like a more traditional western RPG, with cinematic presentation, a more real time action oriented combat system, and the usual perk/leveling system.

Beat Ghost over the weekend and it was amazing. The ending was so damn well done. Easily one of the best lines in video game history.

"You have no honor!"

"and you are a slave to it."

That shit was fucking chilling. Summed up the whole game in just those two sentences. I don't want to spoil the end game with my choice but lets just say I continued the path of breaking away from the old rules.

I've kind of been hopping around from game to game with nothing really grabbing my attention. Might put the controller down for now and just wait for FF16. I did get like 4 chapters into Guardians of the galaxy and it was the best at keeping me engaged so I might finish it up. The straight gameplay aspect of Blasphemous was also more of what I was looking for though not really looking into more cinematic games right now.

Darkest Dungeon

Gave it another go, after a bit of a debate in the DD2 thread. It's what I remember it as. It's good, but goddamn, is it ever a tedious grind. Just constant micro-management. It's also just plain cheap as fuck. That RNG is so stacked in the AI's favor, it's not even funny. If we're counting "misses", it's easily 7-1 in the AI's favor in any given fight. The fights just drag the fuck on because of that shit, and it just becomes a chore after a while.

Assassin's Creed: Odyssey

Still plugging away. 65 hours in. I want to say it's too big for it's own good, but I can't. I'm only like halfway through the campaign, and the map still has huge chunks of land not discovered, but I've never had the "Okay, that's enough" feeling. It's just so loaded with content, and always manages to throw you a curve ball when you're starting to get burned out. There's still so much to do and discover. Like, I didn't even know that this game had big ass boss fights, until I went on some random side mission to take down an actual Minotaur. This thing went on for hours. I started at a mission where some swindler was fooling people into fighting a fake Minotaur, which you complete and get a cool helmet from the fake one, but then it didn't stop, and branched out to a big mission where ended up fighting the actual Minotaur from Greek Mythology. It was so cool that they tucked this showcase boss away at the 50 hour mark. Then I fought a big ass cyclops a few hours after that...and there are more...and they're just optional bullshit. Love it.

This game is a 10/10, and is right up there with any other AAA western RPG. I could nitpick here and there about the combat being a bit weak and repetitive, or some mission design not being as fleshed out as I would like, but considering the scope of the overall package, it's not worth mentioning. This is an open world RPG bonanza. It's so good.

Hogwarts Legacy is honestly pretty mediocre IMO. The Harry Potter world looks great but like most open world games it's just a facade with no real interaction. You run around taking quests and then following a map marker to find/kill something. The feeling of being a student there is pretty non existant, you attend classes (cutscenes) a few times to get new spells, that's pretty much it.

It's kinda like a Ubisoft Harry Potter but actual Ubisoft games like AC:Odyssey execute that formula a lot better.

Persona 5 is awesome, one of the best games of last gen. You don't have to be a huge JRPG fan (I'm not either) but you should obviously be open for that type of game.

Hearing great things about humanity. Since it's free on ps+ gonna give that a go next seems a bit like lemmings

Been watching my lady play Hogwarts Legacy nonstop since it launched on PS4 on Friday, and she's loving it.
My wife is loving it as well, she played all day Sunday which is unusual. Looked fun so I tried it out and it’s actually pretty fun exploring and all.

Aaaand she's still playing it.

If you guys like CRPG then try to get tyranny on cdkeys. It's super cheap like 3 bucks. Oh give fear and hunger a shot if you guys can. It's so brutal.

Jedi Survivor 8.5/10

Just finished this up. Combat was awesome, graphics were amazing, level design/variety was solid and the story was decent.

My biggest problems were there was way too much annoying platforming, and the non stop cutscenes interrupting the main boss fights which were in themselves interrupted by QuickTime events way too many times. This got much worse towards the end of the game which was disappointing.

Game did a great job of making you not repeat sections though. (Except for some of those platforming sections).

How was the customization as far as clothes and all that stuff? Really the only area I wanted to see improvements for the second game.

There’s more than just ponchos lol. It’s a big improvement from the last game.

Perfect. Don't get me wrong ponchos were cool but I wanted more. To many games coming out the second half of this year that I want to play though so who knows when I'll get to this.

Started playing redfall since it's free on game pass. I actually like the gameplay and design... Although the map is pretty small.

The story so far is lame and I'm not sure it's going to get better. Overall fun though.

You sure love the underdogs. I remember when Fallout 76 came out everyone was shitting on it and you’re like “GOTY for me”

I respect that. I find that for video games more than just about anything else people have a group mentality and will just doggypile on a game for being bad even if it’s only got a few issues or praise a game as being glorious even if it’s only a bit decent. It’s not often in gaming that you find games that are mixed reviews.
