One of the most inspirational characters he's ever portrayed.

Such roller coaster of emotions Hanks go through in this film.

Loved his performance, definitely one of the all-time best.

I loved it as a kid. Ultimately I think actors are cattle and playing a retard is the lowest hanging fruit. Speaking of Gump. Whatever happened to Zemeckis? Dude went from making some of my favorite films as a kid to just remaking Uncanny Valley: The Movie over and over again.

8.5 if I could, the part where he’s talking to he and Jenny’s tree is heartbreaking, and the insecurity mixed with his pride in knowing that his son is “smart” is so endearing in the last bit were great little nuanced choices in his performance.

He's not disabled, he's just dumb.

I mean Carlin pointed out that the average person is kinda dumb, and half the population is dumber than that.

Forrest was just at the bottom of the scale.

While I never really thought of it as a great movie- and I know there was a time when it was widely accepted as such- I think it’s highly entertaining and well made. So just because I don’t think it’s a cinema classic doesn’t mean I dislike it.

To me, Zemeckis’ best are Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

In my opinion, Hanks’ performance is great in the sense that a lot of that film hinges on him playing Forrest as likable and endearing which he absolutely does, in my opinion. Without a compelling central performance, it would be very difficult to make that a good film- even with all Zemeckis and co.’s technical brilliance.

I do really like the dynamic between Hanks and Sinise, too. Stacked best supporting actor category that year- Landau as Lugosi, Sinise, Sam Jackson in pulp fiction, Paul Scofield in Quiz Show and Palmentieri in Bullets Over Broadway.

Hanks is clearly a good actor but I think the kind of films he spearheaded in the mid/late 90's were pretty bland conservative crowd pleasers with a lot of unlearnt self importance to them.

What is really the story of Forrest Gump? that the dumb guy who just goes with the flow gets a great life whilst the people who question the status quo get fucked.

IMO a great performance in a great movie, but of course most anything is debatable ...except for the soundtrack, which was one of the very best in the history of film.

"A woman emotionally and sexually manipulates a vurnerable well meaning mentally challenged veteran over the course of several decades"

My favorite Hanks movie.

Soundtrack was amazing as well.

Whether you love or hate the movie you should recognize he owned that roll and it would be one that could easily ended up a disaster for a lesser actor.

I loved that movie and recognize his acting in it, as top notch. 9 out of 10.

I didn't care for Hanks recent SNL skip. I thought that was dishonest. I doubt it will help SNL and their sagging ratings.

Saturday Night Dead

50 years later, Saturday Night Live isn’t edgy, subversive or innovative.

For Forest Gump, Hanks acting made the movie pretty much. From time to time I still hear from my father the lines Hanks character said "Lieutenant Dan, Lieutenant Dan." Dad was an Lt when in the army and the frequent annoying "Lieutenant Dan" reminds him of his time with his platoon.

It's a story about how being a good person comes back to you.

Forest's selfless actions lead to him being rich and successful. If he never risked his life to save Lt. Dan, he wouldn't be rich.

If he never kept his promise to bubba to open a shrimp business and give bubba's mom half, then he wouldn't be rich.

If he never got rich then he would've never got to bang his crush.

So the moral is, be a good person and you too can raw-dog some drug addict with AIDS.

A good person who doesn't question the status quo and gets rewarded.

Meanwhile those who do question it are shown in and extremely negative light, at least until Captain Dan learns to not be bitter about his country crippling and then abandoning him.

Again I think a very conservative film but then again a lot of "prestige" Hollywood from that era was.
