Although really I don't tend to think the boxing matches were going only for realism, there intended to be larger than life and operatic.

I liked it, it was better than the over the top Rocky ones

Yeah there not as over the top as Rocky and higher on the brutality but I don't think there aiming for 100% realism either.

Lots of long shots in modern cinema I feel tend to just be showing off but this is one of the best ever done which really captures the characters perspective...

Oh, absolutely. The main reason Scorsese put De Niro off for so long on making this movie is because he didn't care about sports and didn't want to make a boxing movie. But when he came around on the character study, he still didn't give a fuck about boxing, and so he went much more for a psychological probing of what it's like for this character to be in the ring. Scorsese went so far as to often change the actual size and dimensions of the ring for certain matches/shots, and then of course there is the Sugar Ray crucifixion scene. Not to mention, the sound designer went off the wall with the bizarre noises, including animal sounds. Realism was most certainly NOT the watchword here.
