Tom Aspinall is humble enough to admit that Daniel Cormier would have likely beaten him in his prime.

Aspinall (15-3) was quick to name Cormier (22-3) when asked about a Ultimate Fighting Championship fighter who could beat him. The heavyweight champ considers prime “DC” a stylistic nightmare. According to Aspinall, Cormier’s short height and feared forward pressure would be difficult to deal with. Aspinall also noted that the former Olympian was nearly impossible to takedown and possessed an insane gas tank.

“Yeah, you know, Daniel Cormier. Peak DC has the worst style for me ever,” Aspinall said on the ShxtsnGigs podcast. “He’s like short — I’ve said this to his face — short guy who just keeps walking forward, changing levels in between grappling and punches. You can’t take him down, and he’s got cardio for days. For my style, he’s a nightmare. He was a beast. Peak DC was unreal.”

Cormier was undefeated before suffering his first pro loss in a light heavyweight title bid against Jon Jones in 2015. Cormier won the title against Anthony Johnson after Jones was stripped of it due to a hit-and-run incident. “DC” defended the belt twice before losing to Jones in the rematch. However, the decision was overturned due to “Bones” failing a drug test, and Cormier was restored as champion. Cormier would defend his title once more before moving up to heavyweight. Cormier won the heavyweight title with a knockout win over Stipe Miocic and defended it against Derrick Lewis, becoming the first UFC fighter in history to successfully defend titles in two weight classes. Cormier lost his title to Miocic in the rematch and retired after losing the rubber matchup in 2020. “DC” was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 2022 and is now a part of the UFC broadcast team.

Black Fedor was for real!

In his prime, especially at heavyweight, he had the striking power

He had the wrestling

And he had insatiable appetite

Of recent UFC HWs, I'd say Francis would be a nightmare matchup for Aspinall. His propensity to keep his chin up and blitz in straight lines seems like a bad combination against Francis.

Yeah I'd agree with that. As good as his win against Pavlovich was, he got cracked a few times, if that was Ngannou I'm not sure he eats it

That being said, I think he goes right at Ngannou, and who knows how he would have dealt with that?

Aspinall was asked a question and he answered it.

If he had said, "Nobody would've given me too many problems. I'm the HW GOAT in making." He'd be seen as arrogant and full of himself this early on in his career.

I believe he's just being humble while paying his respects to Cormier whom he likes a lot.

Interesting. Most people in here were saying he destroys every HW in history.

I'd favor Tom against DC. I also think Cain and Fedor are worse match ups for Tom.

Heavyweight Dc before he dropped to lhw , the one who gave Josh Barnett a rocket launcher throw like he was a little kid was a motherfucker

Not the heavyweight Eating barbecue looking like stay puff marshmallow man who came back to fight Stipe

He would have known every jones fanboy would have jumped straight on it too but said it anyway. The comments from casuals on any article on social media ive seen with this quote are hilarious. Obviously it means and proves absolutely nothing, just like it wouldn't have done if he had said "nah i destroy every HW champ of the past 20 years with ease".

Got to let the Jones copers have something to hold onto though i guess, since their ped using goat literally 'retired' rather than settle it in the octagon with Tom. One man wanted the fight, the other did everything he could to avoid it, thats the only fact we have. Pretty funny stuff.

Also prime DC was a beast and compared to most HWs definitely brings a different challenge for his style. Thats all he was saying.

Man seeing DC steamroll Bigfoot and more so Josh Barnett was something crazy to witness back in the day. Mad potential had he stayed at HW and wasted less time on random fights while trying to cut down to light heavyweight

Not to mention DC was already pushing 36 years old by the time he fought Jon Jones the first time. Looking back, Jon Jones by that point had so much more experience, especially at the championship level and was around his peak.

DC would have given a lot of heavyweight champions trouble without question

MMA media aren't doing him any favor: athletes that talk too much but perform once a year are annoying to me.
BTW this guy is put on pair with the likes of peak Fedor or DC but looking at the sad state of the HW division i'm starting to compare him to guys like Herring.

Lets do some math:
Peak Jones beat peak DC 70/30
Peak DC beat peak Asp 60/40
peak Jones beat peak Asp 80/20... oh... I forgot... Asp is the GOAT (he is just humble person), so math dont work here, sorry<bye>
