Not only did he deserved in Oscar nomination, but also deserved in Oscar win for his performance.

His best performance by far in his whole career.

Just so real, raw, naked performance. You can feel the desperation in his whole being.

10 a masterclass performance indeed.

I saw part 3 about fifteen years before finally watching this one. I was quite surprised with the film.

A bit shy of masterclass, but absolutely a fantastic performance in a fantastic film. Personally, though, I've always preferred his acting/characterization in the sequel. He's not in the process of breaking down like he was in First Blood, but in a lot of ways it's an even more challenging role the second time around. In the second film, he's "centered" in a weird way, not quite Zen but stoic. Busting rocks in prison after his ordeal, he managed to put his mind back together, and while he'd lost some of his humanity to all that he'd experienced, he still had his integrity. How Stallone managed to convey this - the stoic demeanor, the flat affect, the vacant expressions - while always making sure to throw in flashes of humanity - the "expendable" monologue is glorious, complete with his wry smile - is an incredible feat of acting skill.

I need to watch again but the meltdown scene at the end is hard to watch and I am ambivalent. If it because it‘s too real or too cringe?

Great story, but Sly has always been better off-camera than on. His writing and storytelling were awesome.

I think it's kinda a mixed bag. As always he did a great job with all the physical stuff, and doing a lot of his own stunts, but imo a lot of the dialogue is pretty hammy. The character is also a bit of a mess. The baddest soldier on the planet, but also cries like a baby quite a lot of the time.

I give him a 10 just because:

The original movie was 3 hours long with a bunch of cheesy lines... Stallone told the director or whever edits the film that they should cut all of Rambo lines and they did.

Movie became a classic.

Stallone knows his shit.

He also made a kids movie out of what was supposed to be a much darker more violent tale. Stallone wanted mass marketing and got it but the movie would have been 10x better. Thats were its disjointed first with how he reacts in prison and then in the woods. They made a hide and seek game out of what is a deeply gripping violent explosion out of the Rambo character which also explains why Teasle has such a problem with him.

Stallone deleted all that and made a much cheaper hero figure out of it. The one horrible performance was Trautman who acted like a comic with way overacted lines and cheesy portrayl of the good old wise patriotic pro soldier.

I still like the movie but Stallone is responsible for its successs but also directly for making it a far less captivating disjointed mess of a movie.

Picture him actually killing the cop in prison and then the scene in the woods from the book. This movie would have been on a classics list way up there with the best ones.

I get he wanted a different ending allowing for a follow up but everything else could have been done so much better.

I think it's the best action movie. It's not just cheesy, mindless violence (which i do enjoy). I thought he nailed it, and Brian Dennehy was perfect opposite him.

- I watch that movie from time to time. Great simple movie. Great soundtrack, badass performance by Brian Denehy. I'm a big sly fan, he outshines Arnold. Locked Up is a underated gem. Tom Sisemore stolle the show. But Sly is great at it.

- I always liked. Now i am older, i apreciate more. In the end, soldiers are just paws in someone else war. Thwey spend a fortune to train the Rambos, but when they come back, they dont have nothing. No hero welcomes.

don t get me wrong I really like First blood. One of my favourite winter movies. And I fully appreciate the political message. And somehow I totally buy the situation initially and the escalation. Asshole cop firmly but gently escorts Rambo out of town > Rambo is bad ass so decides to come back > asshole cop becomes a bit rough > Rambo is a trained killer with PTSD as a tortured POW so shit escalates. Of course the rest is insane but that‘s the whole point of the movie. One dude taking out an army and torching a town. So far so good. Like I said, the meltdown scene is either masterful or cringe but in both cases disturbing.

- I always liked Rambo human side. He was the only action hero, to shed tears even for villains. Back in that time, cinema was lacking that, athleast american cinema. Sly character felt more human.

Also Sly is a great physical actor. He can story tell, i only started paying attention to that, after i started watching pro-wrestling documentaries.

It was very good...just shy of an ATG performance. Second only to.Rocky in Sly's career. 8/10

Locked up was filmed* I believe* in rahway prison, with real prisoners. If you know rahway prison that takes some Balls to go in there voluntarily.

I took my motorcycle license test right outside the prison, me getting on l something so freeing as my bike in the shadow of such a violent place was thought provoking
