SUMO - 2022 Haru Basho (March 13th - March 27th)

Day 8 - Ryuden proves just a bit too much for Kitanowaka at this point, looking like the clear favourite to take the Yusho now. Atamifuji getting another win, this time over Yago, it's definitely a learning basho for Atamifuji.

Tochi 5-3? I'll take it. Really enjoyed Takayasu vs Wakamotoharu, the battle for hand placement before either of them made a move was great to see. The Kotonowaka train keeps chugging along and ploughs straight through Endo, choo choo. Great match between Ura and Wakatakakage, and even though i want Ura to get some wins, i want Wakatakakage to stay in the Yusho race. Shodai looking good again today. Mita bulldozes Hoshoryu and then helps him up, you love to see it. Feels like Takakeisho has slightly altered his sumo this basho, whether it's so he doesn't get injured again or whether he just knows he needs more weapons.

All caught up now.

Shout out to Hakuho on commentary today, I understood exactly zero words but he was there.

We have an interesting Yusho race after 8 days
Takayasu with a perfect record not far behind we have 3 close contenders Mitakeumi, Wakatakakage and Kotonowaka also still in the race with only 2 losses is Abi and Takakeisho.

Everyone's Sumo has been very strong but I think I'd have to favor Mitakeumi and honestly Wakatakakage who has looked a lot sharper than previous Basho. Takayasu while perfect now historically falls off hard in week 2. Abi has just missed out on the W but improves on those little faults every time we see him. Takakeisho could be a problem for everyone if he stays strong

Terutsuyoshi looking good today with the power double leg takedown.

I thought Shodai was cooked today for sure, but he hung in there and got his first career win against Hoshoryu. Unfortunately to retain his rank he needs to go at least 4-2 and he still hasn't faced Abi, Takakeisho or any of the four leaders.

I was going to ask after Day 8 if Yutakayama looked injured to anyone else? Seemed like he folded up against Tochinoshin really easily. Bounced back with a win today though against Discount Abi.

Can't believe they did Atamifuji like that! They let him bow, Kanno walked off, he crouched, the Gyoji was in the middle of saying "Atamifuji" and suddenly the head Shinpan is like "hey guys let's do a mono-ii". Gotta love Enho throwing Ryuden into the dirt and then Kitanowaka getting the win right afterwards, it's still a 2 horse race at the top, though i wouldn't mind 34 year old Azumaryu winning the yusho, he's looked awesome this basho. Also if you haven't seen Asanowaka vs Tokushoryu i'd ask you to give it a watch if only for the ending. After they both fly out of the dohyo the next Gyoji up dives out of the way to avoid being squashed, but in doing so he leaves the poor lady in the green kimono directly behind him completely unguarded... but what does she do? She sees the carnage heading for her and slightly turns her head to the left, without breaking her form, and avoids the danger, a classy lady moment straight out of an anime if i do say so.

Tochi at 6-3! You love to see it. Takayasu still unbeaten but the big matches are in the next few days so we'll see if it'll last. Man i love watching Kotonowaka learn from each basho, he's definitely improving, one to watch for sure. I feel bad for Wakatakamoto in Makushita, his brothers are both doing well in the top division and he's out there struggling in division 3, sad times. Takanosho is not having a good basho, though he's not alone in that regard. It amazes me how every basho people try pushing Takarafuji's neck and it does nothing, come on Abi, how did you not know this? Wakatakakage keeps his yusho hopes alive in an extremely forgettable bout. Shodai comeback?

Mita looked like he was in trouble there for a moment, but as soon as he got that right hand grip it was all over for Tamawashi, what a beast.

there's just no way Shodai doesn't have long covid or something
he's pulled some back to back bangers that you don't see often, yet some days it feels even i could push him off the dohyo.
i don't understand what's wrong with this guy.

The recent Grand Sumo Breakdown podcast that I shared yesterday mentioned that Shodai actually is having a difficult time post Covid. They noted in training Shodai struggled against makushita Rikishi in his own gym. That he quickly runs out of breath and cannot perform his brand of Sumo.

there it is. at first i thought it was just some sort of despondency, guy lost the will or something. but every now and then he pulls some high quality stuff, like two days ago. no way there's not something there. he's probably not 100%, probably not even 50%.

bruh, Kotoeko's sukuinage.... that was so great.

Takayasu almost lost that one a couple times it seemed like, but good to see his patience paying off. i felt like maybe he was a little too patient this time, but it all worked out in the end.

again Wakatakakage showing his strength, and although Shodai was in trouble there his left underhook was really powerful.

hahaha, that was great. the gyoji even gave her a kind of sheepish look after he dove out of the way.

Special consideration for people dealing with Covid would be nice but you really can't change the JSA's opinion on shit

Tochinoshin probably reaching katchi kotchi.
Kotonowaka doing well, I'm glad I mentioned him as having potential a year or so ago.

Tertuyoshi also a hopeful for 8 wins, banzai!

Wakatakakage with a face full of blood taking Abi out.

Genuinely pulling for Ozeki Shodai. Don't give up that spot young man.

Takayasu looking really good, he's got Wakatakakage tomorrow though.

Really enjoying this focused Enho. I hope he's able to continue this brand of magical Sumo.

Interesting day in Juryo - Enho showed Atamifuji what it's like to be beaten by a trickster for the first time, Ryuden got beaten quite easily and that gives him 2 losses in as many days after Enho beat him yesterday, and Kitanowaka kept his march to the yusho going as he escorted Yago out of the dohyo.

Tochi 7-3? What is this and how do i get more of it? Nice work this basho from Tochi, regardless of what the next few days bring. Kotoeko you beautiful bastard, great defense followed by an awesome throw, that was awesome to watch. Then i have to watch @Stormtrooper85 's gardener go all gas no brakes when Shimanoumi doesn't even have one hand down, not to worry though, he ended up face down in the dirt. Terutsuyoshi pulling a nifty little katasukashi on Wakamotoharu, that was nice. Kiribayama having another great basho, it's always entertaining when either Kiribayama, Hoshoryu, Kotonowaka or Wakatakakage have a great basho. Speaking of Kotonowaka, 9-1! Love it. Ura at 1-9 makes me sad, though he's at a high rank this time so it's not really that bad. Damn it, i thought Hoshoryu had Takayasu there for a moment, great bout. Wakatakakage with another win, though he got bloodied in the process, not sure where the blood was coming from exactly. Hokutofuji makes easy work of Mita and that will hurt his chances at this point. Shodai the reborn looking like a real Ozeki in the last few days.

Oh my, oh my... just looked at tomorrow's matches -

Takakeisho vs Kotonowaka
Mitakeumi vs Abi
Wakatakakage vs Takayasu

mitakeumi didn't give one fuck today
takayasu seems anxious that he somehow didn't lose yet. i just don't feel yusho from him. but who knows?
Wakatakakage feels different, more focused. from him i do feel he'd bring it in a yusho playoff. if he beats yasu tomorrow that is.
nephew will probably continue to yo-yo between ranks for a couple more years. he's obviously good but at times he's simply overpowered, cause his technique is great.
kotonowaka's fat cell placement is the most bizarre fat topology i've ever seen in sumo. sneaky yusho possibility?

anyway, go Shodai. 3 good days, make it 4

Takakeisho vs Kotonowaka
Mitakeumi vs Abi
Wakatakakage vs Takayasu

Fucking Kagayaki, this god damn turtle mowing the grass. Makes me sick

mah man Kotoeko with another great sukuinage.

Tochinoshin one win away, i like the sound of that (knock on wood).

Takayasu really turned up in the big match against Hoshoryu though. really patient again and didn't allow Hoshoryu to get any tricky throws or trips off.

and Wakatakakage eating Abi's thrusts like it's nothing was also really impressive. he's having a phenomenal tournament.

can't believe Shodai is 5-5 after the start he had.
