SUMO - 2022 Haru Basho (March 13th - March 27th)

Atamifuji 6-6 with 3 days left to get 2 wins, making me nervous. Ryuden up to 10-2, with 6 guys right behind him at 9-3, spicy.

Ura wins! Give him the yusho!

Ishiura shouldn't have come back early as i said yesterday. Glad Hoshoryu got to 6-6.

I know i haven't been watching sumo as long as you guys, but holy nuggets, Wakatakakage must've evolved after the January basho. He looks completely different this basho. I guess it's just hard work paying off but it's so impressive.

Shodai beats Takakeisho with ease. Yeah i'm convinced Shodai's performance is just based on mood and confidence level.

Takayasu keeping up with Wakatakakage with the win over Mita. Still hoping Mita gets 10 or 11 wins if he can.
i think i heard on the NHK broadcast that Wakatakakage took a page out of Hakuho's book and has been training his trapezius muscles in particular.
maybe thats a part of his recent success.

Nice job by Mita walking through Wakatakakage like that.

Kotonowaka achieves another double digit basho at the expense of Shodai. Can Shodai possibly upset Takayasu tomorrow?

Also, congrats to the Kazakh Kinbozan on the Makushita yusho.

i felt like Mitakeumi would be a really tough matchup for Wakatakakage as strong as he is. Not too surprised to see him drop one.

another great match from Takayasu. the longer the match went, the more it was in his favor and once he got the grip on Takakeisho's mawashi it was just all over.

Ishiura, my man....

I don't know why the injured rikishi came back, they should have both stayed out.

Rooting for Takayasu yusho but I hope Shodai gets his KK tomorrow, Taco can wait a day

Ura with the beautiful slip thru the backdoor reversal on Meisei.

and surely Hoshoryu's life flashed before his eyes as all of Ichinojo came crashing down on him.

Takayasu vs Takakeisho was a fun match even though my guy lost.
Would be happy to see Takayasu win this basho to help improve his confidence.

Mitakeumi's base looked too low for Wakatakakage to come under and up like he's been doing.

and shout outs to Aoiyama and Tobizaru for going extra today. great efforts.

Well well the race is still close.

Takayasu vs Abi
Wakatakakage vs Shodai

Possible playoff tomorrow?

Let it be known that i always believed in Shodai. Never once did my faith in his abilities falter even for a second!

Seriously though, awesome basho from Shodai after the shocking start he had. I truly believe that he just said "oh fuck it" and went balls to the wall and it worked, then he gained momentum and realized he could actually get 8 wins.

Kotonowaka easily dispatches Mita, which again puts him in the yusho race 2 bashos in a row. He's got a very weird looking physique but i love watching him.

Pure strength and a little bit of balance helped Wakatakakage snatch victory from the jaws of defeat twice, awesome.

really nice recap video for day 14 from Chris:

i really do think pressure affects Takayasu more than other guys. huge sukuinage from Shodai, though.

great job by Wakatakakage to survive the initial blast and great to see him using his strength defensively to maintain his balance and counterattack.

I think I'll be surprised if Takayasu loses to Abi tomorrow, Abi seems pretty well figured out at this point but Takayasu looked pretty deflated after losing to Sumo GOAT and my personal friend Shodai. It seems he takes that sort of thing with him unlike say Terunofuji who takes an L and blasts his opponent out the next day.

Shodai doing more with his career in 2 weeks than Benavidez has in 9 years.

We here at Shodai Club headquarters are celebrating of course, we always believed in OZEKI SHODAI

When he's at his best Ozeki Shodai can truly beat anyone but Terunofuji. And Kotonowaka, I guess, but never mind that, we'll get him next time.

Pretty crazy how Abi went from being potentially in the yusho race to potentially getting an MK on the final days

I'd rather Wakatakakage stayed at pre-ozeki position a bit longer. His rivalry with hoshoryu is one of the key elements to make ozumo entertaining these days. When they become ozeki and are expected to maintain 2 digit wins each Basho, I'm not sure I can enjoy as much.

what a final match
wakatakakage was amazing staying in
congrats to him and to taka as well

Great final day of bouts.

Tobizaru vs Ichinojo was fun, even if i started to feel slightly dizzy, Hoshoryu ended Kotonowaka's yusho hopes, and Shodai performed again!

I don't even have words for the playoff bout. Mind-boggling escape by Wakatakakage.

i feel bad for Takayasu, but again i feel like he just couldn't take advantage of the opportunity he had. i felt like he was at his best when he was patient in his matches, but the last few days he seemed to rush too much. amazing match in the playoff though, and the way Wakatakakage was able to escape on the edge of the dohyo was amazing. incredible tournament from Wakatakakage pretty much top to bottom, and i really wasn't expecting this much success from him.

Mitakeumi ending with 11-4 is a great first Ozeki tournament, and Shodai somehow pulling it back to 9-6 is amazing in its own right, while Takakeisho getting 8 wins is poor but it'll do.

Hoshoryu getting his 8th win is phenomenal as well in his first sanyaku tournament.
