SUMO - 2022 Haru Basho (March 13th - March 27th)

havn't really been following Sumo in a while. Now that Hakuho is retired, who is the consensus best in the world now?
conveniently it would have to be Terunofuji. he's not at Hakuho's level (who is) but he's huge and very strong and definitely skilled. when he first came up to the top division he looked fantastic but picked up some huge injuries and health problems and dropped way, way down nearly to the bottom of the sport. his journey back to the top has been pretty amazing and his 2021 was amazing with four championships and promotion to Yokozuna.

BUT it sort of feels like we're waiting for the other shoe to drop and for his injuries to flare up again. hopefully him withdrawing this time isn't a sign of that, but at least for me it's a constant worry.

I guess they already decided Onosho gets a forfeit victory on Day 6 with Teru withdrawing?

Ishiura is already out with the neck injury so they could just redo the bout order, wonder what the deadlines are for that? I guess they don't do that once the matchups are already announced but I'm just really not a fan of forfeits

I'm just not a fan of Ohnosho getting anything. They almost certainly could re-order the matches because they do it all the time especially nearing the final days

Hoshoryu, gentlemen. None of Abi's shit.

Wakatakakage as well, this new generation looks great.

When is Asanoyama back? July? Division 3, right. Better have his shit together

Asashoryu was the only one on Hakuho's level in recent memory

Asashoryu was the only one on Hakuho's level in recent memory
yeah, Asashoryu was definitely the closest to Hakuho's level and i actually liked him more, but even he fell short imo.

career overall yeah,
but against Hakuho specifically he was up 15-14 in their rivalry.

Wakatakakage took Daieisho to school today. Wow.
happy to see Endo doing well.
Takayasu in the lead but we'll see how he does in the 2nd 1/2 of the basho. last time I recall him being the leader at 8-0, he caved in to pressure. maybe now with Teru out, his confidence has grown.
Ura continues to make me laugh with his hijinks.
Kiribiyama impressed me with his patience vs Ichinojo.
Takakeisho with a big win and one comfortable step closer to kachikoshi.
and Shodai FINALLY fighting like his life depends on it.

fantastic first 1/2 of the basho thus far.

Ura out here showing us all that you're allowed to jump backwards at the tachiai

Ura does some nutty sumo but it's great stuff usually
Wakatkakage has a fire lit under his ass this basho, nice
Hoshoryu will be one tough dude couple of years down the road and some more muscle on him. doing what he does at 22 is wow

phew, Takayasu doing great but like @moonwolf said he's been here before and stumbled.

Wakatakakage looked great and Hoshoryu is doing really well to work back up to a positive win/loss ratio.

You guys ready or what? This tournament has been fantastic, I have no idea who will win, the fact that taco is the leader makes things even more confusing considering what we know happens to him later in the tournament. The second favorite, mita, is also usually inconsistent and I have a hard time believing he can pull two yusho in a row. (Although he does look fantastic)

Something tells me it will be one of the two loss rikishi who may pull the upset, maybe abi?

Who knows… but I really do wish either Taco keeps it together or mitakeumi wins a yusho as an ozeki and officially enters a Yokozuna run. How crazy would it be if after so much time trying for ozeki he barely stays in the tank at all?

Oh and shodai………..

Keisho looks like he’ll clear kadoban though

Hoshoryu looks strong wakatakakakakakakakakkakakage doing his thing… this basho is fun and competitive, even the Yokozuna decided to take a break, mita, taco, abi…. Those guys weren’t going to simply step aside and award him the win the way others sometimes do in past bashos and he has been on a tear for a while so retiring from the tourney seemed like the smart move.

Been busy the last few days so i'm catching up now.

Day 6 - Awesome evasion by Wakatakakage against Takanosho, eventually leading to the win. Loved how Hoshoryu just absorbed and countered against Abi. How did the judges not see Tobizaru's hand not touch the ground earlier in the match? I suppose they could have just kept a mental note and were gonna call a mono-ii at the end regardless. Shodai got obliterated again... not making the rank of Ozeki look very good at all. Mita looking back to his normal self against Mensei.

Really pulling for Kitanowaka to get the Yusho at Juryo, but there's a long way to go and as long as he gets to around J5-J6 for May i'd consider it a win.

Day 7 - Kitanowaka keeps his Juryo Yusho hopes alive at the expense of Enho, great chess match for the short time it lasted. Nice to see Atamifuji is starting to string a few wins together, will it last though. Yusho or not, Ryuden needs to be in the upper ranks and he will be soon enough.

Kotonowaka looking to have one of those impressive bashos where he gets double digit wins, hopefully i haven't cursed him. Takayasu keeping up the momentum for now, will he fall off when he has to face Mita and the others though? Another nice win for Hoshoryu after yesterday's performance. Abi vs Ura... a weird one for sure, kind of like the Hakuho vs Tobizaru tachiai from last year i believe. Glad to see the Super Waka Bros are racking up win after win, especially Wakatakakage, who i wouldn't mind winning the Yusho honestly. Mita looking solid again today in victory over Onosho. Shodai looking like he just said "Fuck it" before coming out today, very determined to get the win, even if i thought he'd find a way to lose.
