SUMO - 2022 Haru Basho (March 13th - March 27th)

on the one hand i think Daieisho is such a terrible matchup for Shodai since Shodai's defensive style just lets Daieisho do his style of freight train sumo with no resistance. but also he should do way better and he should know that about Daieisho at this point and have some strategy for countering him instead of just standing there and taking it. poor start anyway.

Takakeisho looked quite good and followed Ura well.

once Terunofuji wrapped up Hoshoryu it was pretty much over.

and really glad to see Tochinoshin start off with a win. It didn't really look to me like Akua was KO'ed or really rocked or anything. maybe he was and that double kachiage was rough, but I think he just lost balance.

and plenty happening down in Juryo this tournament too. Ryuden is back in the paid ranks after his suspension, and got a good first win. Atamifuji who @Nova44 and i have talked about before is also newly promoted and started the tournament off with a win, and Enho got a good win on day 1 too.

Was really torn on Mita vs Ura, i like them both. Mita looked awesome and Ura didn't get injured so all is well.

Wakatakakage just ragdolled Onosho like a small child, Abi is back on track, and Shodai remains Shodai.

Daieisho with excellent hand placement and pressure stopped Teru from getting going, excellent showing.

Day 2 is over and it's already spicy.

EDIT - The Shinpan got hit a lot today

If Ura doesn't get hurt can we truly say he's preformed his brand of Sumo?

I don't know about you Fork, but i think Atamifuji needs to work on his tachiai speed. He's never gonna pressure the big guys with such a lacklustre tachiai like the one he's currently displaying.

woah, Wakatakakage blew away Onosho. i really wasn't expecting that, Onosho looked great on day 1 and if Wakatakakage was going to win i wouldn't have thought it would be like that. tremendous stuff from him.

and i know he's good but it was surprising to see Abi blow Tamawashi out of the water like that too. great speed and perfect hand placement at the tachiai to beat another really dangerous pusher/thruster.

and Shodai.... Ross Mihara said it best... "ew..." and Takakeisho didn't fare much better, and once Ichinojo got ahold of him it was pretty much over.

conversely, Mitakeumi looked incredibly solid against Ura.

and the kinboshi for Daieisho... another shocker. he did a really good job of keeping Terunofuji's meathooks away from his belt.

big day 2.

yeah, his tachiai looks quite soft. i don't think that's why he lost on day 2 but for sure it's something he could improve. with his body type he'll never have blazing speed or anything, but it would be good to put his size advantage to good use with a big hit at the tachiai.

Didn't Daieisho beat Teru in January also?

Oh it's me vs Hakuyozan. You smash into Enho too early then you lose and still throw him.

Watch your kneecaps Hakuyozan

Teru beat Daieisho in January, but it looks like he lost to him in his first Yokozuna tournament.

that was some sweet justice. lost of good sportsmanship in the top division today, but Hakuyozan had to bring in the disrespect in Juryo.

Just watched day 1

Bruh Terunofuji is not here to play ...never seen such bodying...that said the weight difference was huge..

ICHINOJO had it but let Mitakuemi get belly to belly it was over after that ..

And Shodai again risking his Ozeki...

Watching day 2 now

Day 2

Koto and Teruto trying to kill each other..dam that was a big fall..

Sadanoumi and takayasu was a battle...great Match and toss

Ishi like a cat out there pouncing on his opponent..

Hosho struggling abit drops 0-2 surprising ...

Wakatakakage with the most furious finish of the day...will be watching him closely this basho loved the energy in his attack today

And ...AGAIN Shodai gets pushed back..and out...he needs to work on his redirections more angles

Mitakuemi with the belly push of doom again...man ...hes like a collapsing wall u cant stop the forward motion

Terunofuji , getting caught in his over aggression could he be mentally too angry? Perhaps a calmer approach would be better he has come out super aggressive on days 1&2 but Daieisho fought well

I hope ishiura is OK, the way he fell today did not look good.

Takakeisho is not the same since his injury. His thrusts lack power and he looks like he lost some weight.

Golden boy sends the hamster for a ride

Mitakeumi was recently married, wasn't he? Seems to give him focus.

Ura getting closer to beating Terunofuji. One day young padawan.

Wakatakakage seems very focused and able to perform his brand of sumo well.

Takakeisho's disappointment is palpable.

Shodai, es normal.

Wow what a day 3.

We had 2 narrow escapes right at the start, we had throws left and right, we had Shodai being Shodai, and Teru ALMOST cost himself the match.

Wakatakakage and Kotonowaka are looking completely changed this basho, let's hope they keep on improving. Mita doesn't seem to be happy settling for Ozeki, looking very determined these days. Oh and of course Hoshoryu finally gets a win with a sweet throw.

Don't let this post distract you from the fact that Enho and Midorifuji are both 3-0 in Juryo. If you haven't seen Midori's match from Juryo today i'd highly recommend it, a short but sweet encounter.

I don't think it was the fall. To me when he's walking out he's moving one arm and not the other, and if you watch the match again, at the tachiai he gives up immediately after the top of his head hits Kotonowaka. I'm not saying i'm right but i think he got jolted down the back-left side of his neck.

good stuff from Hoshoryu, although i suspect he actually lost that one.
hamster needs alternatives. everybody knows what he's going to do.
