Opinion RFK Jr. says HHS will determine the cause of autism by September

There are a lot of factors that have been linked to autism. Age of the parents, particularly the father, is a common one. There are many many things that seem to be linked to it but I'm far from an expert.
Goddamn... should I reverse course and stop paying for morning after pills?
talking serious now, do you know whats the age in most recent studies?

Has that been proven?

"Autism is hereditary and therefore does run in families. A majority (around 80%) of autism cases can be linked to inherited genetic mutations. The remaining cases likely stem from non-inherited mutations.

There’s no evidence that children can develop autism after early fetal development as a result of exposure to vaccines or postnatal toxins."

"I need to quickly find out a reason to be upset that RFK wants to focus on researching what causes autism. Oh, wait never mind. I'll just go right to the end zone"

- Half of sherdog.

Yeah sure, he wants to focus on what's causing it while at the same time the Administration he works for is currently crippling early intervention programs for it (most are Federally funded).

Give me a break.

Next thing I know you lot are going to be claiming that he's trying to find "the cure" for it, which will end up being some eugenic bullsh*t.

Do we all agree that autism is on the rise?
No. Autism diagnosis are in the rise. That’s not the same thing. We have much better awareness and improved testing methods. They also broadened the range for diagnosis’s, so a person tested 30 years ago that wasn’t diagnosed might be today.

Diagnosis on the rise is the flashy headline being used to scare people while leaving out the context. I guess I can’t say for sure it’s not in the rise, but general consensus seems to be that it is not.

The problem with reactionary thinking is that people MUST believe there is either a nefarious, or a noble cause of everything they see. "Discovery" is usually utilized in the context of things the reactionary wants for themselves but wants to deprive others of (like land rights), and nuanced learning is usually attributed to some spiritual process.

Trans people couldnt have always been here. Something is MAKING them trans. Reactionaries often say "liberals/leftists encourage people to become trans"...instead of saying liberals/leftists are fine with trans people being themselves.

Gay people couldnt have always been here because God didn't make people that way. Something must be MAKING them gay, and if you're one of those the correct answer is ignore your natural inclinations and just...become straight.

They view autism the same way, because this is the default setting to seeing more of a thing. Autistic people couldn't have always been around and just referred to as "weird"...something is MAKING the kids autistic.

I saw a video of a girl who is high-functioning autistic and said her family are distraught. They have NO idea how it happened. She does an impression of her Dad, who is OBSESSED with Star Trek, only consumes steak and beer, never responds appropriately to social cues, and cant quite grasp why people just dont get him. Lol

Autistic people have always been right in our faces:

I want to stress that I'm no expert and cannot advise anyone on anything in this regard. This is my wife's expertise so I learned a lot by proxy.

Studies suggest that the risk increases with fathers over 40. It's still a topic that is being explored. Your family's history with the condition definitely matters as well

It was more for fun, I dont feel like having kids (it can always change, off course). But I got curious about the age thing.. I still have half a decade {<tongue}

Exactly.

Experts broadly agree that the increases are mostly from improved awareness and systemic screening, a broader diagnostic category (a more inclusive set of criteria which includes milder cases), and policy related incentives (such as classifying it as a developmental disorder to obtain those funding resources).

The autism/vaccine research is the biggest looney tunes waste of taxpayer money ever seen. They are firing people who have valuable roles in government and then paying big money to Trump's buddies to do crackpot research on autism. This shit is just beyond the pale.

I tend not to take advice from recovering Heroin addicts. But that's just me.
but you have no problem taking advice from recovering human traffickers who use fake names and accents though.....

sorry could not help myself. hypocrisy is glaring here.

How is it actually determined? Is it just behavioral? I know it's a "spectrum", but that opens the door to diagnose people just acting a little strange, and then give them a bunch of pills. A lot of mental conditions have been "rising" over the years, but the doctors have a big motivation in diagnosing them as such. Kind of reminds me of the ADHD trend in the 90's, where doctors were basically diagnosing any kid who couldn't sit still with it.
People with autism don't get 'a bunch of pills'. It's not something that can be 'treated' or 'fixed' with medication.

great, its not as if it hasnt been researched for decades, finally somebody is gonna get to the bottom of this!

They will find the cause by September and the cure by November.
I feel confident.
